I gave up on the language bc after like lesson 7 or something of ana pana, it was just too hard for me. The sentences were starting to become nonsensical to me (as i mentioned in an earlier post) but most annoying of all was the hearing tests. I can barely make anything out of them they're so low quality. 'Mi' sounds just like 'ni' and the accusative ending is inaudible. There are of course other issues with not being able to make out the words, but those are some of the recurring problems.

Now, i want to try again, but i dont know if i can actually make it this time. I want to start the lessons over from the beginning, since chances are i'd be even worse at the higher ones now (but partially bc i cant remember where i stopped).

Am i allowed to do that? I didnt do too well the first few lessons either (even though i've been studying espernato on and off for almost a decade now) simply bc the whole language is so alien to me.

Can i redo the lessons i've already done? Should i even bother to try again? I doubt i'll make it this time, but for some reason i dont want to give up.

While a lernu team member will have give the definitive answer, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to start over.

After all, it's not how many times you fall down that matters, it's how many times you pick yourself up after falling that counts. ridulo.gif

Ok, that's my quota for old cliches for today. Although, given how many times I fail at things, it's one of my personal favorites.

just restart as much as you'd like. No real rules about that sort of learning.

BTW, don't worry if you can never really get a hang with the audio, there's many other audio resources out there which you can use and even if that doesn't help if you get up to a certain level with the written language and with guesswork on the pronunciation, it'll make it much easier to hear different words.

I'll warn (from my own language learning) that no matter what the language if you aren't familiar enough with a word or not sure what to look out to when listening to someone speaking, it'll all sound strange, alien and incomprehensible. You have to be familiar enough with the language.

But anyway don't burn yourself out. Language learning is best done while relaxed and feeling lazy. The human brain is well built for passive language learning in conjunction with some active learning, as opposed to full out active language learning.

This is good advice. I keep Esperanto podcasts on my BlackBerry and listen to them, or parts of them, repeatedly while driving around. I don't always pay attention, but it's a way to let the language sounds wash over me.

You can feel free to re-do the lessons as many times as you want. I have even encountered users who did this *simultaneously* -- they sent the same lesson to multiple tutors, in order to get a range of responses. Other users like to re-do the lessons until their answers are perfect. You can do what you want.

If you find Ana Pana frustrating, maybe you should do another course and then come back to Ana Pana. Bildoj kaj Demandoj, La puzlo Esperanto, or Vojagxu kun Zam. Or all three! do a few sample lessons and see what seems fun and interesting to you.

There's also the good old Free Esperanto Course that you can download if you want to try some different lessons. Plus the Free Esperanto Book, which has a much-extended version of Ana Pana, and which may have some more explanation than what's found in the online version.

If you get too discouraged with one course, try another one. But I do think it's a good idea to go all the way through at least one course that's corrected by a person, in order to get feedback on areas you need to work on. You can take the Free Esperanto Course above with a tutor, by e-mail.
