I used to be a por man but I've since become a pro man, because I was worried that in certain cases, the por could look like it means "in order to" instead of "for".

erinja:PMEG also has a very brief discussion of this topic, with a similar notation that Zamenhof used -n after nouns of action, but that we don't do it today .
There's another page in PMEG which deals with that subject in slightly more detail, here.

PMEG:N-finaĵa objekto ankaŭ povas esti priskribo de aga O-vorto: La tirado la ĉaron estis malfacila por la bovo. La ĉaro estas objekto de la tirado. Dankon pro la elekto min. Normale oni tamen uzas de por montri la objekton de aga O-vorto: La tirado de la ĉaro estis malfacila por la bovo. Dankon pro la elekto de mi.
Translated:
The object taking the -N ending can also describe an action noun: La tirado la ĉaron estis malfacila por la bovo. The cart is the object of the pulling. Dankon pro la elekto min. Normally though we use "de" to show the object of an action noun: La tirado de la ĉaro estis malfacila por la bovo. Dankon pro la elekto de mi.

As for "por" v "pro", I really wouldn't worry about it, they are both fine. PMEG's opinion:

PMEG:Danki por io estis malprave kritikata. Ĝi estas tute bona esprimo. Sed oni povas ankaŭ uzi la esprimon danki pro io, kiu nuntempe estas tre ofta. Ambaŭ dirmanieroj estas same logikaj.
Translated: "Danki por io" has been wrongly criticised. It's a perfectly good expression. But you can also use "danki pro io", which is very common nowadays. Both are equally logical.

I'd say "Dankon ke vi lavis la pladojn."
This is how I'd say it, too. This form makes it clear that the washing up has been finished (as opposed to 'dankon, ke vi lavAs la pladojn', which clearly shows that you are thanking the person for washing up right now)

If you say something along the lines of 'dankon por lavado de la pladoj' it can only be understood in the context whether the action is completed or is happening now.

I bet if you ask this question in the Esperanto-language forum here, you'll get more people using "dankon, ke vi lavis..."

Come to think of it, why are we all using 'pladoj' here? I thought the expression was 'lavi la vazojn'.

This is not language evolution beginning here Ceiger.

There are many beginners in these forums who are not aware of standard usage. This doesn't mean that their 'errors' will influence the language. When standard usage is pointed out to them they will change what they say.

Although there are a number of ways of saying 'thanks for ..ing' in Esperanto, it is useful to let English speakers know that 'mi dankas, ke ..' is not unusual.
