Quite naturally, people are likely to have views they want to express on topics that are dominating the news.

It would be helpful for those wishing to have their say in Esperanto if the national language forums were to include regular posts on the requisite Esperanto vocabulary, as and when such topics occur.

Free catalonia! - what is catalonia?
God doesn't exist! - almost certain!
God does exist you heretics! - whose God?
The world's going to end! - 100% sure

What is the big deal with all of this? Screw it.
Catalonia = apparently the most oppressed land in all of the Evil Spanish empire, whose citizens are flogged daily, and harassed by the infamous language police, themselves descendents of those responsible for the Spanish inquisition.

(Ok, so there are some realistic and good arguments, but still, there's a lot of dramatics and hyperboles when these sorts of issues come up in the vidpunktoj section...)

On the topic of forums, one of the changes planned for the "new lernu" is to separate the forums from the lernu site.

The forums won't be going away, but they will be on a separate page (however, once you've logged in at lernu, you can browse to the new page without logging in again, as if the forums were still on the same page).

It will be easier to follow discussions in multiple languages at once, due to a fundamental restructuring of the forum system. We are hoping that by separating the forums from lernu itself, we may draw in more Esperanto speakers who are not interested in learning the language, but who want to use it to discuss interesting topics in Esperanto.

jean-luc:RSS are not really known I think. And it's a really uncommon way to use a forum board.
I'm very surprised by this. I thought people should be quite familiar with RSS feeds - most sites offer them.

Firefox often refers to them as 'live bookmarks'. You will see this symbol in the address bar of your web browser when they are available: RSS

Is RSS really such an uncommon way to follow a forum board?! I use them often. How do you usually follow forum boards? Email updates are ok for individual threads and when there's not much going on, but RSS is better overall I'd say. It's also better for the site administrators as RSS doesn't use up any bandwidth.

Anyhow, you now know about RSS, so problem solved! You can now easily follow all the Esperanto-language threads.

Very clever answer.

That's a laborious and unreliable way of doing it, though. If everyone's doing that, then I'm not surprised they miss half of the Esperanto posts.

I mean, clicking through all the threads... Why do that, when you can get a nice update sent to you in order of date via an RSS feed? And the RSS feed shows you clearly what you have already read, so no time lost faffing around looking for the new stuff.

Is this really the fundamental problem?! Nobody's using the RSS feeds, so they just check the forums directly on the webpage. This then means that they are attracted to the English forum as it's just one list.

If so, then all of this has nothing to do with the 'liveliness' of the English forum, but just that people can't be bothered clicking through the various Esperanto forums! Oh dear.

jean-luc:I usually find the interface of forum boards much more convenient to use than RSS (or email). I guess it's because they are usually well structured, and RSS works chronologically.
Ok, it's personal preference to an extent, but I would alway use RSS, rather than just randomly taking a look at the forums via a browser every so often.

An RSS client tells me when there have been updates to a conversation in a forum. If I don't use this, then it becomes very difficult to follow any conversation.

I tend to flick through the RSS feed to see which threads have been updated, and then if I'm interested in one I'll open that thread up in a browser to read through it.

By the way, it's very good that the Lernu RSS-feeds include the whole messages of the posts in the forums. This means it's also possible to read them in the RSS client without opening a browser if I want. It also helps to decide which messages are worth opening in a browser.

This is a much better situation than the RSS-feed that Libera Folio provides for the readers' comments - with those you can only see the title of each comment, but not the actual message itself. This is infuriating, as most of the time the title doesn't really tell you much, so you end up having to open loads of comments in multiple tabs in the browser, including many comments that turn out to be pointless reading. It's a nightmare, so I often just ignore the whole thing.

Ok, if you absolutely don't want to use RSS feeds, then you could always check this page, which brings together all the latest messages of the Esperanto-language forums here. Just one list, just like the English-language forum here! Yay! rideto.gif

Loads of people here must have Google email accounts. Just log in and then use their 'Google Reader' for the RSS-feeds!
