Question 1:

With the word "malpaci" (quarrel). I wanted to check I've got the right idea.

1. La viro malpacis kun la virino.
2. La viro malpacis kontraŭ la virino.

1. Means that the man and woman are arguing together (against someone/something else).
2. Means that the man is arguing with the woman (as in opposing her).

Question 2:

How to translate "several of the men laughed".

I don't think the word "da" should be used because "men" is limited by "the".

So can you say:

"Kelke de/el la viroj ridis"?

Or do I need an adjective/noun (pluraj? kelkaj? kelko?) instead of kelke?

Thanks!

1a) La viro kverelis kontraux la virino

1b)La viro kaj la virino interkverelis (kverelis unu kontraux la alia)

Malpaci = esti en stato de malpaco, t.e. de milito (ecx malvarma)

2)kelkaj el (inter) la viroj ridis

You're welcome!

Thanks!

So why is an adjective used instead of an adverb in number 2? Seems odd that an adjective goes there.

It's actually an abbreviation of kelkaj viroj el la viroj ridis.

To build on what darkweasel said if he doesn't mind the intrusion, adjectives are also used as "abbreviations of nouns", e.g "la Angla" = La angla lingvo", etc.

The reason they keep the -a is because there's still the "noun" there, they're just pretending to be it rido.gif.

But in "estas bone", there's no implied noun at all (although you could maybe say "estas bona en la mondo", "there is good in the world", where "bona" pretends to be a noun maybe? Bono exists though so not really necessary)

Thanks for the clarifications! ridulo.gif
