In my humble opinion a good translation is the one that conveys the meaning of the sentence, not English words used in it.

Laŭ mi, he hasn't made any mistake apart from that questionable use of "substitute". "ĉar" explains your reason or motivation in just the same way as he's described what "tial ke" does.

I say questionable since it could well be thought of as a substitute, just as you could use "ĉar" instead of "por ke", but the meaning would change as noted. So it depends what sort of substitute you want (for a basketball analogy, it's a substitute in that you're subbing off a really fit, tall man for a small little podgy guy who can't jump nor reach to save himself - you're technically subsituting, but the end result's gonna be different )

I'm very surprised by your opinion here. "Tiel" means "in such a way" so it sounds really silly in the above sentence.

Perhaps "Mi legis ĵurnalon tiel ke mi nun havas konverĝokulojn."
