I have a doubt about which of those alternatives is the best way to ask, for example, "How is the weather today?" in Esperanto:

- Kiel estas la vetero hodiaŭ?
- Kia estas la vetero hodiaŭ?

I'd appreciate if someone explained me when should I use "kiel" and when should I use "kia".

Grateful!

The question with "Kia" is preferable. Kiel asks for an adverb while Kia asks for an adjective. The difference is very subtle. Consider this example:

Mi vidas vin bone.
I see you well (my sight has no defect)

Mi vidas vin bona.
I see you (and you are) well.

Basically in the first sentence "bone" relates to the verb, while in the second sentence "bona" relates to the object.

The questions to obtain these two sentences would be:

Kiel vi vidas min?

and

Kia vi vidas min?

* * *

For the verb "esti", this difference is more difficult to catch, however it is still there. "La vetero estas bona" means that the weather is good. "La vetero estas bone" means that the weather is in a good way. Technically the first sentence is more proper (therefore asking with "kia") but asking for the weather with "kiel" is also common, mostly because when talking about the weather impersonally, an adverb is used. E.g., "Estas pluveme", "Estas malvarme", and so on.

This is just my opinion and I might be wrong. I hope I helped though. ridulo.gif

So, I should ask "Kia estas la vetero?" in order to get one to answer something like "La vetero estas varma.", right?

I think it's a little troublesome for me to chose between those tablevortojn ending with -a and -el sometimes. I've got to get more used to them...

Well, but thanks a lot for answering me!

Right.

It all depends on what you want as an answer.
Well, but thanks a lot for answering me!

Hi

This is the forum whose title is "In English". It is for English-language discussion. As you can see in the list of forums, there are also forums for discussion in a bunch of other languages, as well as many Esperanto-only forums. Not all beginners can say very much in Esperanto; that's why forums exist in other languages, so users can ask questions in their native language, get help, and interact with other users while they are still learning.

Saluton.
