ceigered:Or that the population of Sao Paulo is most likely higher then the world population of Esperanto speakers. And me and my friend Kaja here in Sydney were speaking Esperanto together, at a random Volleyball game when some old guy asked us if we were speaking Esperanto, to our shock he said he studied in his youth back in some European country. So who knows how many people speak it, or have learnt it to some degree because its not like I walk around with Esperanto tattooed on my forehead...TAKE is just on in Sao Paulo, I got someone to say that he could not meet Esperanto speakers on the street. So clearly there isn't THAT many brazilian Esperantists

All the while that it remains true that Esperanto can be easily acquired through self-study and that if a reasonable standard is obtained, then the language is retained in the mind even when not used for many years, it will be impossible to put a figure on the numbers of speakers.
Evildeva's anecdote illustrates the point. And I myself am a living example of this, being able to point to a period of some 15 years in my life in which I would have been completely invisible to any head count of Esperantists.

Evildela:because its not like I walk around with Esperanto tattooed on my forehead...I cite the "DID U DO ANY EFFORT??" thread, comrade. Your lack of dedication to the cause is pitiful!
I have found that there is quite a few people who've said "oh yeah I've heard of that/learnt a few words", so perhaps EO actually has a bit of a presence amongst other cultural/touristy curiosities.
