I found a klaku.net page for Catholic Esperantists from Brazil and found this:
uzanto de "klaku":De la tuta loĝantaro en Brazilo.... kiom da esperantistoj estas?Seems rather pessimistic when written that way, but when you consider that the Esperanto community can be broken up so much into so many different peoples, sorta cool.
Kaj, de tiuj esperantistoj... kiom da ili devas kredi je iu Dio?
Kaj de tiuj, kiuj kredas je iu Dio... kiom da ili devas esti katolikaj?
Kaj, de tiuj kiuj sentas kiel katolikaj... kiom da ili estas aktivaj por havi retliston aktivan?
ffff....
(TRANSLATION OF THE ABOVE/TRADUKO DE LA SUPRAĴO)
Of the entire population of Brazil, how many Esperantists are there?(And that's the first time I've seen and understood the "must of deductive reasoning" in another language (e.g. since he wasn't present at the time of the murder, HE MUST BE INNOCENT!). Cool stuff).
And, of those EO-ists, how many of them must believe in some sort of deity?
And, of those who believe in some sort of god, how many of them must be catholic?
And, of those who feel they are catholic, how many of them are active enough to have an active (bulletin board?)?

313:in which country did esperanto speaker are so many in number?and how many if u knw the figureGeneralisation is risky. Would you say Chinese is the largest speakers of Mandarin, Pu Tong Hua, counting on the population ?
Then you are wrong. Not all Chinese speak Pu Tong Hua. The Mongolian, Tibetian etc.
It is naive to base on the population and deduce to that. There are many countries in the world that they don't speak the national language daily. In asian countries especially.
Thus, it is hard to find out how many esperanto speakers. Lernu has 100,000 registered, are they all esperanto speakers ?
Nope. I would say.

EoMy: Lernu has 100,000 registered, are they all esperanto speakers ?definitely not, I know several lernu users (one of them even has two accounts) who were just interested in E-o once but who lost interest soon.
Nope. I would say.

And EoMy, it's not wrong to ask how many there are and which country has the most. E.g. China has the most mandarin speakers, so you'd want to go there if you want to seriously meet many many mandarin speakers, even if there are some people who don't speak mandarin.
Similarly, maybe 313 might want to know "maybe if ever go to brazil I might find many Esperanto speakers".
(whether or not they should or shouldn't is too complex for here, since most of the regional non-chinese languages are dying out anyway since there's no one who needs to use them anymore).

ceigered:I wonder how many active users there are... Probably around 50k? Then again, Facebook probably has the same thing, heaps of inactive accounts. It is not wrong or right item in asking the numbers of speakers of a certain language. This has been going on for a long time and the argument is also going for a long time. Now we have to be more careful to give out the answers. Just as how many English speakers, wondering all British speak English daily ?

It is time to put away the wrong concept to compare the number of speakers in this age.
TAKE is just on in Sao Paulo, I got someone to say that he could not meet Esperanto speakers on the street.

Now we have to be more careful to give out the answers. Just as how many English speakers, wondering all British speak English daily ?Why is it the wrong concept though necessarily? I do get what you're saying, and I understand that you don't want Esperanto judged on its number of speakers alone, but it's not like everyone's asking so they can judge us, some might want to know for all sorts of demographical reasons.
It is time to put away the wrong concept to compare the number of speakers in this age.
I do agree though that we should be careful when answering such questions so we don't give people the wrong impression, but at the same time, we don't want to give them another wrong impression and think that because Esperanto is called the "international language" that half the world population secretly speaks it haha.
TAKE is just on in Sao Paulo, I got someone to say that he could not meet Esperanto speakers on the street. So clearly there isn't THAT many brazilian Esperantists
