As a speaker of a language without an accusative marker, I find it hard to know where I need to use it sometimes. I came across this...

La ceterajn necesas klarigi -- (The remaining needs to clarify(?)).

...and don't understand why ceterajn is in the accusative. I don't see a subject in this sentence and thought one was always needed.

Reorder the words:

[oni] necesas klarigi la ceterajn

Is it clear now? Esperanto grammar is not confusing (I would say that rather about the English grammar).

You can read it as "estas necese klarigi la ceterajn". The subject is "klarigi la ceterajn".

EDIT: Super-griek is of course right, the subject is there. I modified my reply accordingly.

This was only to help him understand the structure of the sentence, not to give him a rightful explanation. So it was right. The original was wrong.

Well, not everyone's happy with Esperanto either, so all of us striving to be Bilingual English-Esperanto speakers are ultimately buggered by the sounds of things .

(anyway, grammar isn't confusing, it's the way we humans suck at teaching it that makes things confusing )

Anyway, I'd rewrite this "La ceterajn necesas klarigi" as the following:

Necesas ke la ceteraj/cetero klariĝu.
It is necessary, that the remainder should be clarified.
(or 'klarigu', if this "remainder" we talk of are people or intelligent beings that well be clarifying an unmentioned subject).

Does that sound better, to those with a better feel for these "ke_______(finite verb)" sentences?

Thanks for the explanation. It's hard for me to grasp this nominative, accusative thing sometimes. If I come across something like "La ceterajn necesas klarigi", I could roughly understand what it meant, but would probably get it wrong if I tried something like that myself -- Unless I phrased it in a different order in my head.

I thought that would make more sense but it doesn't. I can't tell whether they mean:

The rest need to be clarified
(Necesas ke la ceteraj klariĝu)
or
The rest need to clarify
(Necesas ke la ceteraj klarigu/la ceteraj devas klarigu)
or
The rest are necessary (in order to clarify something else).
(La ceteraj necesas por la klarigo/klarigado)

I'm meant to be somewhere in the intermediate section as far as EO knowledge goes and I can't figure out what it says either, I think it might just be written really badly. I wouldn't worry and just be proud/satisfied you could get the general gist of it

I know your pain, but after thinking about it, I felt I couldn't quit from learning knowledge (and otherwise doing nothing at all), so I just give myself breaks or look at things in EO from a different angle
