In the new lernu, forum postings will likely contain an indicator of the poster's language level
I wonder how that will be decided?
The plan is that all levels will be determined by exam. If you want a higher level, you have to take (and pass) the exam for that level.

On the opposite side of things, some current lernu users are overly modest with their levels. Perhaps they have passed a high level exam, but they forget to update their level. Under the new system, when you take and pass an exam at a certain level, your profile will be updated automatically to reflect your new level.

I don't like this idea of exams. I am not at school. It is good as is.

geo63, it's no problem. No one will force you to take an exam. Your language level, in that case, will be marked as either "basic" or unspecified.

I like the idea of an automatic level raising related to exams passed. Its silly to let people choose their own level. Anyone could say they are advanced, but not be advanced.

I am not overly concerned with my own level of Esperanto though and would not mind being called komencanto forever. For me it has merely a thing to study during free-time, a hobby. I only want to ask questions about PMEG rather than engage in interaction socially in Esperanto with other users. I prefer the English forum.

And what should I do that for? Will I profit? No.

I vote for "unspecified". "Unknown" would also be fine. It has a taste of mystery, adventure, unexplored land...

For me I dont know any of the people here personally and it hardly matters what the think about my level or yours. I for instance just took the level a and b tests. I got a 44 on level a and a 42 on level b. Neither was a passing score. Just take the exams. Otherwise it looks like you want to play games with people. In which case, who would want to speak Esperanto with you?

Personally, I am excited to learn of the new "level system". I have read some very interesting material about teachers who want to make education more like gaming and have had great success offering "levels" and "achievements" similar to those offered by social networking sites and online multiplayer games. I hope that having a similar system in place here will encourage me to move past the eterna komencanto level. Good choice Lernu!

inb4 completely irrelevant flamewar about the extremly interesting ( senkulpa.gif ) topic of the importance of taking lernu exams for being taken seriously senkulpa.gif

anyway it was me who proposed using the exams as a basis for the level indicator so i can't be against it okulumo.gif

You get it all wrong. Do you think that it is your language level that matters the most in an esperanto conversation? What games with people? Who cares here what my real level is? And what has it to do with other people talking with me in esperanto? I miss the point. One of our forum-mates wrote:

For me the exam system makes more sense for equality above the nation you reside in. For instance, there could be antagonism between British and American, as the British think Americans are stupid, and so there would not be equal communication, but with an objective exam system, only the facts would be of interest. Also, nations have different forms of communication, even speaking the same language. China and some Asian nations are concerned with "Face", and if there is no objective standard unrelated to any living human being, exams for instance, then these other issues should not matter as much, as it will all be in the open.

Otherwise it would be like a bad classroom environment with some extroverted students dominating. I for one would not want to toy with say someone from Poland who maybe has psychological issues related to Poland rather than a true international mindset. A 3rd party correction system would prevent students from correcting each other without warrant.
