Do you guys know what are the differences between the 8th and the 9th editions of Montagu's Step by Step in Esperanto? I'm currently trying to learn Esperanto and am using Kellerman's Complete Grammar of Esperanto and Teach Yourself Esperanto. My local library has the Montagu book in its 8th edition, so I wanted to know what were the major differences between editions before I went out to borrow it.

The 8th edition is OK, believe me. Just start learning... sal.gif

Saluton Mark,

Teach Yourself Esperanto is an excellent book, for those of us who have used it, like myself. I still use it for reference. Richardson's Esperanto: learning and using the international language, which others prefer, is also good, as is Jen Nia Mondo (both parts).

Butler's book is good as a reference grammar, or for use with a class or teacher. I don't know about self-teaching, as it has no key to the exercises, as does TYE. I doubt whether having the 8th edition will make much difference, but if you are able to get hold of the 9th, so much the better.

At any rate, find one that suits you, and work through it steadily to the end.

I would also recommend trying the course Ana Pana on this website, as it includes on-line help from a tutor. You might find it (and other courses on this website) a good preparation for the ones in book form.

I'd also like to start learning Esperanto but from a hard copy. So will try to ask for a book in the library to be delivered (as I live in a small town).

You please suggest more names of books for which I could ask. demando.gif

You could ask for the titles which I've now put in my earlier message.

The EAB runs a free correspondence course, which is worth considering if you have not studied the language before, but would like a 'taster'.

You could download the Free Esperanto Book

Hey thanks everyone for the speedy replies! I'm trying to see if I can obtain at least a basic command of the language by the end of September. Hopefully by that time I will have enough knowledge to make sense of the Esperanto only parts of lernu ridulo.gif

You may be interested to know that we've recently simplified the sequence of suggested courses at lernu. I encourage you to take full advantage of the free online resources, in addition to the books you're looking at.

And of course I hope you'll continue to interact in these forums. You can always ask questions of your tutor in the Ana Pana course, but these forums are another great place to ask questions and get prompt replies.

Let's race! I will try to do the same. Keep in touch. okulumo.gif

(I think you'll both end up surprised okulumo.gif)

(Well, assuming you have spare time that is. Luckily, even if you're behind your own schedule and have to put learning on hiatus, it's easy to get back into!)

If you haven't done so subscribe to the word of the day thing here at lernu if you're inbox isn't already overfilling. Good way to pick up new words and phrases without having to seek them out.
