Vocabulary lists arranged by word frequency

Some of you may be aware that in the "Juna Amiko" section of lernu's publications page, there is a list of around 1500 words that the editors of Juna Amiko felt were the most commonly used in Esperanto. They are arranged in seven categories; category 1 has the most frequent (or useful) words, category 7 has the least frequent. There is one additional category that isn't numbered, with more words that the Juna Amiko staff felt were useful.

This list has been on the site for a long time. The news is that I spent some time inserting those words, arranged by category, into lernu's word learning system, so you can now use the lernu vocabulary section to practice the words, by category, just as you would practice any other vocabulary taught here.

You certainly deserve a pat on the head (or a green star) for putting many hours of effort into creating something which should give beginners one solid step towards fluency. I tried the first seven from group 7 (choosing the option 'to Esperanto - typing') and got corrected thinking that 'raporti' translated 'report/communicate'. I then similarly tried the first seven of the 'unclassified' group 'aliaj vortoj' and my only 'mistake' was thinking that hospital in Esperanto was malsanulejo, not hospitalo! You may wish to include a few alternatives like this in the acceptable answers.

The way that these vocabulary lists work is a little weird.

If you write "report/communicate", it is treated as a single word; unless the original definition has those exact words, it will mark you wrong.

(In addition, "communicate" isn't that great a translation for "raporti")

For example, the given definition for "aktuala" is "current, topical". But if you give it "current/topical" as an answer, it will mark you wrong.

Also, if you give two definitions separated by a comma, and one is wrong, you will be marked wrong. For example, if I answer "aktuala" with "current" or "topical" I'll be marked correct. But if I answer with "current, up-to-date", I'll be marked wrong.

I just figured out how to add additional Esperanto words of the same meaning to the translation system, so "malsanulejo" is now accepted as an alternative to "hospitalo". I also added "foti" as an alternative to "fotografi", which I wanted to do before (but hadn't yet figured out how).

The system may not be perfect, but I think Lernu! is a remarkable resource for learners of the language. I'm grateful to all those who've put in the effort to make it possible.

This lets you learn the most frequent words first, which is what most people want to do.

I think this is a wonderful tool. Thank you for contributing it. I'm wondering, would it be possible for the rest of us to contribute lists to this? If we could find a way to share the effort among us, We could build on this significantly. I'd certainly be willing to help come up with some additional lists to the ones you provided.

It would be nice to have lots of different categories. The word frequency categories you've already contributed, names of animals, names of foods, names of professions, prepositions, tablewords, etc...

If we can also contribute lists, how should they be formatted and where should we send them?
