Novico Dektri:As interested as I am in seeing said movie, I must admit that I'm more intruigued by modern films and prefer nice, clear, colourful pictures. The only movie which incorporates both these and Esperanto, according to my experience, is Gerda Malaperis. I'm trying to secure a copy from the libroservo in Montreal, but unfortunately they haven't responded yet. Alas!Ooh. I like modern films with color as well, but in my opinion, Incubus, in spite of being black and white and old, actually has better acting and higher production values. I had high hopes for Gerda, I hoped it would be high quality and professionally done, I even reserved a copy before it came out, but once I received my copy and watched it, I thought it looked kind of amateurish. There's significant reverberation in the indoor scenes, I'm not exactly sure what professional movies do to prevent indoor scenes from sounding echo-y, but in parts Gerda has a bit of a "home movie" feel about it. Plus the acting is mostly not very good, Gerda seems to do little more than cry the entire time. Plus it looked to me like they went pretty much word for word from the original book, and I think it would have benefitted from some changes. For example, Gerda is written for learners; it starts out very easy, and gets more difficult as it goes on. The movie does exactly the same thing. Some parts tend to be very repetitive, simply because stories meant for language students tend to be very repetitive. Anyway, I'm still waiting for that high quality, professional-looking Esperanto film. It's difficult to do, and expensive, which is probably why it hasn't been done yet. Gerda actually reminded me very much of a recently-made Yiddish film I bought, similar production values, acting level, echo-y indoor shots, somewhat stilted dialogue.
People who really liked the original Gerda book seemed to like the movie more than I did, though (I thought the book was boring).

I think one of the bigger stumbling blocks would be finding good actors that also speak Esperanto. As the makers of Incubus noted there may be a couple of million speakers but they are incredibly wide spread. Makes it tough to get everyone together for a shoot
And you kids stop bashing older films! The greatest movie of all time is Casablanca! Well it's my favorite anyway

The title is "A gesheft". It was made in Monsey! I generally like it but they aren't kidding in the movie's description when they say it's full of "middos". I'm all for moral behavior but it got a tad overbearing at times!

My mame-loshn is Anglish, and also of my parents! But I took 2 years of Yiddish classes at the University of Maryland, although my skills have gone downhill from there, such that even my (very bad, having studied it on and off for the past year) French is probably better than my Yiddish at this point. I am studying Hebrew now but I'm still very much a beginner.
Incidentally, on Yiddish films, some of the old ones are way better than this new one. I think my favorite is "Amerikanisher Shadchen". It's pretty funny, even though it has a liberal dose of Yinglish thrown in.

Yiddish sounds very interesting to me, it's close to German, but it's even much closer to the Austrian dialect we speak in the Eastern parts of Austria.
Also, when I read a text, there are few words that I don't understand immediately.
Anyway, hope my movie comes soon, it's more than 4 weeks now that I ordered it from Canada. Once I get it, I will take a look also at the other movies that are filmed in Esperanto and that I found on a Brasilian shop.

EL_NEBULOSO:Hi,It also depends on whose Yiddish it is. The eastern Yiddish contains many more slavic loanwords, so it's not so easy to understand for speakers of Germanic languages. I remember once in my class, we read a text out of a Russian Yiddish textbook. There were tons of words I didn't know and had trouble even pronouncing!

After 5 weeks of waiting I received the movie "Incubus", yesterday. I watched it today and I really liked it. It reminded me a lot on some (of the older) movies from Ingmar Bergman. The picture quality was good, given the film's age.
Shatner had a rather strong accent, Kia seemed to speak the language well (in case that judgement means anything from a beginner).
I didn't dig through the bonus material of the DVD so far, but there is plenty of extra stuff.
I can recommend the purchase of the movie for Esperantistas and cineasts alike.
