what difference in usage exists between the words verŝi and ŝuti. They both appear to mean pour, but I dont understand their practical difference. Anybody help?

Sorry I didn't realize the post was in english at first. The link above contains good responses. I asked this question a while ago.

ajuzi,

The discussion, which Nala refers to, contains some good examples. I've stumbled on this same question at a time by myself, and the conclusion I came into was, that this more of an issue of English (again). If you take a look at Universala vortaro, i.e. the original word list by Zamenhof

  • ŝut' verser, répandre (pas pour les liquides) | discharge (corn, etc.) | schütten | сыпать | sypać.
  • verŝ' verser | pour | giessen | лить | lać.
As you can see, in French one uses the same verb, verser, in both cases. It seems to me, that for some reason this same verb usage has come into English, to pour, even though Zamenhof gives the verb discharge for the first. So either Zamenhof used a wrong/unnatural word or the English usage has changed since then. I'm leaning to the later alternative.
