To know by heart, to be able to recite from memory, what is the best/most simple way to say this in Esperanto?

There's also "parkere lerni" if you want a longer version (parkere ~ "using the memory, memorically")

ReVo does not say what the verbal form of PARKER/ means - it could be "to know by heart" or "to learn by heart". I’ve seen parkerigi for the latter one.

I’d say parkere lerni for "to learn by heart" and parkere scii for "to know by heart".

I think it's completely from french . 'Par cœur'. Which of course also simply is literally 'by heart'.

Wells (new ed.) has parkerigi for "memorise", parkere for "by heart". PIV 2005 supports the usage of Wells.

However Butler's dictionary (1967) has parkeri for "memorise". In the tekstaro I found one instance of parkeri and several of parkerigi.

The problem is an interesting one because the basic form in the Fundamento is adverbial, not adjectival.

On the whole I am inclined to support parkerigi, but in view of the entry in Butler, in my view parkeri need not be considered wrong.

NPIV lists 'parkere' as an adverb, and 'parkerigi' as the transitive form.

However, I think I have come across 'parkeri' with an object.

Perhaps there is a potential for ambiguity in Li parkeris la poemon. Did he recite it or commit it to memory.

The dictionaries of Thomas Schütz and Boris Kondratjeva both support the use of "parkerigi" in the following sense:

"Li eĉ ne zorgis parkerigi sian rolon" = He didn't even bother learning his role by heart

(example sentence taken from NPIV2002)

For the sense of 'recite from memory', the author Jorge Camacho uses elparkeri in "La Majstro kaj Martinelli":
Emèric elparkeris:

Mia patrujo: la maro.
Kaj la liber': mia Di'.
Otherwise, for 'to recite' you can say 'deklami', which ReVo defines as:

"Laŭte voĉlegi aŭ reciti, kun artisme taŭga tono: deklami versojn; Nolan siavice transprenis la libron kaj deklamis al la ceteraj, kaj li tre bone povis deklami"
