I thought maybe:

However it looks clumsy and doesn’t express what I wanted to say. What I was looking for was an unknown amount of time ago, or in the future.

But the expression 'eons' ago in popular speech just means a long time ago, not literally 'eons'.
I think antaŭ mult(eg)aj jaroj would suffice.
If you wanted to be more hyperbolic you might say en praa epoko.
In the same way that we use 'astronomical' to refer to great distances, perhaps you might use 'geologia' to refer to great periods of time.

Eono : 1) plej granda geokronologia unuo, ampleksanta plurajn eraojn kaj responda al la kronostratigratia unuo eonotemo : fanerozoiko estas eono => geokronologio. 2) En la gnostiko, potenca spirito, amaninta el la eterna dieco : "de la tempo de la Eonoj, nenui satano atingis ion similan".
