Hey everyone. In learning Esperanto, I'm going to want to be able to type the characters with the circumflex over them. Now, when I used Ubuntu, there was this great "compose key" feature which allowed me to type any special character I desired. With Windows, I'm finding this a bit more of a hassle.

I have the US international keyboard turned on, but it doesn't type Esperanto characters. Does anyone know of any program that will enable me to be able to type ĉ, ĝ, ĥ, ĵ, ŝ, and ŭ easily in Windows?

Thanks!

This question has really sort of exhaustively been answered. But here are the two easy ones:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/e...

But what would you use windows?

Thanks, but this isn't really what I'm looking for. I want to be able to simply type a sequence of keyboard buttons to type the Esperanto symbols. (Ex: Typing right ctrl + ' e = é) I can easily do this in MS Word, so I don't need another program for that. Also, I don't want to have to click with my mouse in order to get the symbol to appear.

I don't understand why this is made to be so difficult in this OS. :/

My apologies, but I'm a bit confused by your question. I'm using Windows 7 because it's a new computer.

*edit* I think I've found a program, but I'm not exactly sure how to use it. Do you think you could help me with the instructions? I've installed it, but I'm not quite sure how to work it. Here's the link: http://www.esperanto.mv.ru/Ek/

According to that site, this program is mostly for older versions of Windows.

Windows 7 is not listed.

Go read this thread.

@komenstanto - No, it works fine. Usually if things are compatible with Vista they are compatible with 7. It's just that all of the settings and instructions are in Esperanto and it's difficult to understand. I had it working for a minute, but then I accidentally changed a setting and can't figure out how get it back.

@RiotNrrd - Thanks a million for the link! I see that the program I was trying to use, EK!, is listed. However, Tajpi looks like almost the exact same thing, but in both English and Esperanto. I'll try that and see how it works.

Again, thanks everyone.

I'd recommend using the Canadian Multilingual Standard Keyboard layout. The circumflex letters are just a dead key away.

There's no additional software needed. Everything comes preinstalled on the computer.

Hyperboreus:Sad enough that with certain OS you have to install additional software just to type some characters that aren't on the keyboard.
Actually, Tajpi doesn’t need to be installed, you can also just download Tajpi.exe and run that. Useful when you don’t have administrator rights or want to run it from a USB flash drive.

Perhaps the Admins could look at using "sticky" threads that would remain at the top of the list on the message boards. There are a few topics that pop up over and over again like this one and it would make it much easier for new Lernu! members to find asnwers to their most frequently asked questions.
