My Little Pony has a modern incarnation of its cartoon. And it has become popular among some young men, who create these internet memes. I believe that these fanboys call themselves "bronies".

Reminds me somewhat of a friend of mine who liked the Powerpuff Girls a few years back, a man in his 30's.

I played with the first generation of MLP toys in the mid 80's. It's a bit weird to see them so popular again, especially among men.

erinja, I think the same woman who is mainly associated with My Little Pony now used to work on the Powerpuff Girls, so there are some similarities.

The show started to be discussed on animation imageboards (along with some other new cartoons coming out on the same channel), so it was being discussed by a bunch of adults interested in animation. They ended up liking My Little Pony more than they expected to and actually following the show because they thought it was funny, not just because they liked animation in general. Their interest sparked more interest among other adults and it eventually spread. The woman who runs the show caught wind of this early on and started being very attentive to this new section of her show's fanbase, working to keep the show enjoyable for both adults and children.

It's still kinda strange that it's gotten so popular among young guys, but I think it's an enjoyable show, so oh well... lango.gif

Yeah. It also helps that Faust tries to break the stereotypes of "girl cartoons". I used to like the toys when younger but I thought the whole Brony thing was dumb, (girly stuff tends to suck) but a lot of my friends were into it. So I gave the first episode a chance. Although I was tempted to stop watching before it ended, I wanted to give it a fair chance and let it end. By completion I had the strangest urge to continue "testing" episodes... Leading to me admitting it was actually a good show. (Which is saying a lot. I stopped enjoying most western cartoons before my childhood was fully over.)

Although I'm a girl myself I have to say that the most girly part of the show is the opening theme. The cast is well rounded, especially because of AppleJack, who loves to work hard, and RainbowDash, who tries to achieve her best at her sport. Each character is an attempt to break the girl stereotypes apart, even the ones who appear to fit them the most. As a girl, I appreciate it. But as an audience member, it helps GREATLY and can even bring tomboys like me to enjoy the show. And obviously males secure enough to give it a chance and watch past the opening theme.

I never liked the anime style as a kid (or now), so I never watched anything but western cartoons. Then again, the 90's was a great decade for cartoons, so I never felt a need to branch out to something else. "Batman: the animated series", "Animaniacs", and "Gargoyles" stand out as really excellent cartoons from the early 90's. Daria, from the late 90's.

Zafur (Montri la profilon) 2012-aprilo-01 18:06:38

Haha I think that's exactly why. I was a 90's kid. So along with watching the greatest of Western cartoons, I also had exposure to the anime style with shows such as Sailor Moon and DBZ. I didn't notice the difference, quite honestly, until later. When the 90's ended and cartoons started to suck, I simply just stopped watching TV for the most part (I never got into live action stuff that tweens watch to appear mature) and just read books and went on the internet. I eventually got introduced to anime by a friend in 6th grade and that's where most of my cartoon watching has been happening. Aside from Disney/Pixar/Etc movies.

erinja (Montri la profilon) 2012-aprilo-01 19:03:24

I had friends who liked anime, showed it when they had friends over in high school, etc. I was "introduced" to it many times. But I never liked it; found it a bit boring and didn't like the visual style. But it didn't really matter, because I graduated high school in 1999, so I was well into adult programming by the time cartoons started to suck (and indeed, the appearance of English-dubbed anime shows on US television was part of cartoons starting to suck, as far as I was concerned - Sailor Moon, Pokemon, Dragonball Z, Yu-Gi-Oh, etc.)

Having said that, I'm glad that other people enjoy anime, I have nothing against it per se, it just isn't to my taste. (as Westerns are also not to my taste, or rap music or romance novels)

Zafur (Montri la profilon) 2012-aprilo-01 21:03:53

Haha seems like we have similar tastes besides our preference with animation. ( I also dislike westerns, rap, romance...) I also find a lot of western animation a bit boring now. I guess that's the main part of it. I may be a little used to anime's style of plot with episodes that usually have an order to watch, and have a nice story as if it were a movie broken into episodes. Western's style of easy to follow, random episode mini plots isn't as appealing as when I was younger, but I do have some exceptions. (Obviously MLP is one) The art style also isn't as appealing but that varies with each series. ridulo.gif (Although I agree that some anime styles can look just as ugly! Such as Fruits Basket or whatever. Dridulo.gif

It's a bit sad to hear that you think shows like Pokemon and Sailor Moon were the start of cartoons sucking. Those were really big for the 90's kids. To me they were the the end of good cartooning, not the start of the "sucky" generation. Once Sailor Moon ended and Toonami was gone, I stopped watching TV.
...Especially once Pokemon got to the 3rd Generation, DBZ went to GT, and Yu-Gi-Oh introduced that dice season. Ew.

I'm a bit interested in your opinion of Studio Ghibli's movies? They're the Disney of Japan and made amazing movies such as Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service, Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, etc. Perhaps you're like me and like the movies but not the episodic series? lango.gif I know many people who aren't into anime but appreciate the movies, so I'm curious.

Edit: Actually, considering the age gap I can see how you would think Sailor Moon was pretty bad. The voice acting was hilarious and it was basically slaughtered, plot and all. As a child I was blind to that. lango.gif

erinja (Montri la profilon) 2012-aprilo-02 03:05:22

To me, Sailor Moon was basically a cartoon version of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, only with the characters wearing trashier clothing. I'm sure it was better than that because Power Rangers was pretty bad, but you see where I'm going with this. That's pretty much what I thought about when I saw it. Maybe Power Rangers were before your time but you can look at it on YouTube, I'm sure.

I have not seen any of the Studio Ghibli movies. I read a lot of movie reviews of all kinds of movies, and quite frankly, none of the plots of the Studio Ghibli movies ever really appealed to me, so I never bothered going out to see them. To be fair, almost no movie plots ever seem interesting to me, so I watch very few movies of any sort.

I like long-running plots, so that aspect of anime doesn't turn me off. Big fan of Babylon 5, which had a plot running over 5 years, and I love Korean sageuk (historical dramas). I'm sure there must be at least one anime out there that I would like, drawn in a way that looks good to me, that had a plot that would interest me. But it just doesn't matter to me enough to expend the effort to find that one. (similarly, there could certainly be that one rap song that I would just love, or that one country song, but I'm just not willing to listen to enough of it to find that one song)

whysea (Montri la profilon) 2012-aprilo-03 22:30:46

Hahahaha oh gosh, I remember Power Rangers...

Zafur (Montri la profilon) 2012-aprilo-04 21:11:54

I can totally see what you mean by your comparison. I used to watch Power Rangers when I was really young. I don't remember it too well besides the acting being a little cheesey but I'll trust how bad you say it is. lango.gif Seems like you just don't like the whole group of (pre)-teens save the world (repeatedly) thing which is understandable. But if you think Sailor Moon's clothing was trashy I guess it's good you probably never saw it subbed. xD

Ah I have a friend who doesn't watch movies... I love watching them but the amount has been slowly degrading over time. If you don't like even western kid's movies then it makes sense if you have no interest at all, but if you ever watch only one, I'd say Spirited Away would probably be it. lango.gif

I understand what you mean. Because you don't like it there's no reason to look for one you might enjoy. I don't watch shows in general too often. But when I do feel in the mood to watch a series it tends to be anime because if I'm looking to watch something and not idly waste time, western shows (usually) don't fit the situation. I'm not gonna sit down and watch 2 hours of Tom and Jerry. It'd be okay as a "time waster" but not as a...planned activity? It's hard to make the distinction... I'm comfortable with the anime genre, I can quickly figure out what would be a good new series... Live action shows and other animation, not so much. "Too much effort" for a genre I'm not as into, as you put in better words than I did lol.
It usually only happens when someone happens to tell me about one and that they want me to try it.

Honestly the last anime I've finished was about a year or two ago and it was the Higurashi series. It's a sort of psychological thriller/horror I guess. Different than most anime I've seen so it was very refreshing, and it's a very good series if you don't mind the stuff that comes with horror.

... I feel bad for taking over this thread. Heh.
