What is the most effective way of saying that a device is on / operational / activated? I trid the dictionary, but couldn't find anything.

I'm taking a wild guess at "aktivigata," but that seems a bit long-winded.

Dankon!

ŝalt/i (tr) Fermi elektran cirkviton per speciala aparato, tiel ke kurento komencas traflui: ŝalti la lumon, la ekbrulon de motoro; ŝalti lampon, radioricevilon.

You can also say enŝaltita for switched on. Konektita may also be useful. Have you plugged it in? Ĉu ĝi estas konektita (al la domkurento)?

Old joke. Three engineers are travelling in a car, which mysteriously stops. The mechanical engineer suspects the gear-box or transmission. The electrical engineer suspects the ignition circuit. The software engineer says 'let's get out of the car and get back in again. That may do the trick'.

While we're at it:

What is the difference between Mechanical Engineers and Civil Engineers? Mechanical Engineers build weapons. Civil Engineers build targets.
