The first negative comment on my Esperanto blog

Today, someone said to me this:

"That idiotic system of participles is one of the reasons why Esperanto is only a plaything for lingvofreaks and not a real language."

My reply:

"The participles are actually a more regular and logical system for expressing what takes complex and irregular structures to express in languages such as English. You may be used to them as an English speaker, but Esperanto is not just for the English. So this makes them extremely useful for learners from many different language backgrounds.

A number of languages have systems quite similar, though less regular than Esperanto’s system. This shows it is not an silly eccentricity of a made up language. English’s system of participles is just arbitrarily limited.

They are also surprisingly simple for what is probably the most complicated aspect of Esperanto.

They can allow some really succinct and elegant writing/speech. This is what makes them linguistically interesting, and worthy of exploration. But at the same time, just because they are linguistically interesting and one can explore their expressiveness for a long time, does not make them impractical or un-useful. They are concise for when one needs to be concise.

To say that they are idiotic, seems baseless and ignorant on your part."

Does anyone here just grin and bear Eo's participles? Or do you love them as much as I?

I like them because they are much better than my own language structures. I can't tell how many combinations with the auxiliary verbs "be" (ser and estar), "have" and "go" my language has, and all their subtleties.

However, sometimes I wish there were a simpler way to make the passive voice, without hesitating between -ita and -ata.

That persons comment is a clear expression of trollery. Insulting and inflammatory is always a giveaway.

My response to trolls on my own blog is to simply prune away their trolly comments and not bother responding to them. Because they honestly don't care what your response is, except insofar as they can use it as a springboard to more trollery. So there's really no point in responding, and at the same time there's no reason to clutter up your comment threads with unpleasant nonsense.

Actually attempting to engage trolls in conversation, as you appear to be doing, is nearly always a mistake. Because they really don't care what you have to say. They are all about the reaction, not the content.

If you still want to cover this ground anyway, then I would suggest doing a blog post containing the content in your comment response, except without positioning it as a response to your troll. Trolls should not be reacted to.

EldanarLambetur, I think that RiotNrrd's suggestion makes perfect sense. But, for what it's worth, your troll sounds like a spiteful failed Esperanto student who is simply pissed off because he was too much of a flake to put a bit of persistence in his effort. okulumo.gif

My advice Eldanar is just to delete any reactions to your blog that seem unconstructive, or just plain idiotic. There's no point in trying to engage with such a poster.

To answer the question: I pretty much love everything about Esperanto as a language. Every time I *think* I hate something about Eo, it turns out that I just haven't fully mastered that aspect. For example, I used to hate the accusative, but I'm now a huge accusative fanboy. With mastery comes appreciation for the utility and flexibility that Eo offers.

Almost all languages have the equivalent of corelative words. In English we have the "th" words (this, that, there, then etc); the "wh: words (where, when, what, etc - exception how), the "no" words (nobody none, nothing, nowhere, etc); the "any" words (anyone, anywhere, etc.) and the "some" words (somebody, somewhere, some how, etc.) Only that Esperanto is more consequential!

When someone asks a constructive question ["How are participles used in Esperanto compared to other languages?"], it can start a productive discussion. But trolls aren't interested in productive discussions.

It's your own private blog, so delete the trolling questions and don't annoy the sincere users with them. If the troll has a sincere question, they can come back and ask it in a non-troll-like fashion.

Yeah [: In one brochure I have read, that the system of participles of Esperanto are pure Lithuanian. The man who said this is Croatian linguist Dr D. Brozoviĉ.
