I want to find those literary books that are crafted in the most elegant prose and are of highest quality. For instance, I have heard that Kálmán Kalocsay was an eloquent stylist and his writings represent the best of what Esperanto literature has to offer.

Some experienced Esperantist once told me that she would read "Retoriko" again and again, just for the sheer pleasure of Ivo Lapenna's prose style.

But not all people think alike. What's your idea? In your opinion, which one of the Esperanto authors have reached the highest level of artistic merit, and which books do you consider to be the best? Here I am more interested in prose rather than poetry.

Ps.

I am aware of William Auld's list. That's a basic reading list to get a grasp of Esperanto literature. It would be nice to hear the ideas of other Esperantists too.

Try La Granda Kaldrono by John Francis. In places the descriptions and dialogues are compellingly vivid.

Kazmierz Bein (Kabe himself!) was very influential in the development of Esperanto literary style. He is mainly known for "La faraono", his translation of a Polish novel.

If you're interested in literary style, I recommend buying a copy of Sutton's "Concise Encyclopedia of the Original Literature of Esperanto". It's in English, an excellent guide to the development of Esperanto literature.

That's a great piece of literature Sudanglo, thanks. Alas it is out of print for quite a while now. No online copy either. It's a shame!

I asked cFlat7 to provide me with some YouTube links to Ivo Lapenna's lectures. Unfortunately my message was ruthlessly deleted, so I took the effort to find some useful links in Youtube. The following are a couple of his lectures. The title of files are in Esperanto; well, I hope they don't get deleted again with another preposterous pretext:

Festparolado de Prof. D-ro Ivo Lapenna en Leuwenhorst

Festparolado de Prof. D-ro Ivo Lapenna, Metz 1985

Esperanto kiel lingva esprimo de humaneca internaciismo

I personally enjoyed listening to some of these. Esperanto needs more of such orators.
