SPX:Is anyone saddened by the cover art on most Esperanto books?

I've seen a few winners, but outside of those rare exceptions the cover art for Esperanto books is just painful to look at. You know the old saying that "you can't judge a book by its cover," but the demonstrable truth is that good cover art increases book sales. And I personally take a look of pleasure in a book with a nice cover.

I've noticed this a great deal.

The picture on the front of my La Hobito looks like a pre-Renaissance wall-etching from the inside of of an underground-church in some eastern-European region where the faithful have to communicate via crude, carved pictures hidden away from the watchful eyes of their militaristic overlords.

Quite so. It is completely antithetical to the general ethos. I suspect that a great deal of people drawn to Esperanto would be turned off by Rand's drivel anyway.

Not me Or not totally turned off, anyway. Taken with a grain of salt (she goes way overboard with her ideologies), I think some of her stuff is at least worth reading.

Yes, I've often felt this, too! The cover art is very often woefully bad for Esperanto books, it's really quite embarrassing. This is a shame, as it gives a bad impression of a book that might actually be quite interesting.

Yes, I agree. To be honest, with some of the dreadful front cover designs, they'd have been better off not bothering. If money is an issue, then just make it a plain colour, rather than a botch job of a lame photo/image montage!

Agreed. Atlas Shrugged is way too much overboard, just pure Randian eschatology (with interesting ideas, though), much like the "Left Behind" series (this one is something unworthy of an Esperanto translation).

Besides, leftist ideas are already too dominant in the Esperanto movement, and I find this too lopsided and unbalanced. Repressive tolerance par excellence, perhaps?

It looks like one of the pamphlets brought round by the Jehovah's Witnesses. And as you indicated, the title is sure to lead some people to funny conclusions.

100% agree on both counts!

Just a plain cover is always preferable to something that makes you nauseous to look at, as many of the covers I have seen have done.

The fact that you "can't" judge a book by its cover doesn't mean a great many people don't do that very thing.
