Hello,

I have been trying to learn Esperanto off and on for about a year (though to be blunt, I have not been trying hard) and today I got a online dictionary and proceeded to translate a story I wrote (It was in English) and I was just curious if it was actually readable to someone who actually speaks Esperanto. Might be entertaining as I had a lot of chuckles from the English version.

Here is the story.

Spegulo de Vero

Tie estis princo, heroo al ĉiuj
Kiu povus mortigi drakoj kun punzón
Li bezonis princino, por esti lia reĝino
Do iu alia estus domo purigi

Ili vokis al la tuta lando
Kun novaĵoj kiuj estis tiom grandioza
Ĉiu vilaĝo aŭdis la novaĵojn
Kaj ĉiu havis tie tre proprajn opiniojn

Iuj diris, ke li estis tro juna
Aliaj diris, ke li estis alta-disponus
Sed en la fino, ili ĉiuj venis
Kun tie justa virgulinoj al la duklando

Iuj kie alta, aliaj mallonga
Sed ĉiuj devis taŭgan eskorton
Ĝi estis la plej bela el ĉiu vilaĝo
Kiel patroj sonĝis siajn filinojn kun krono

La Reĝino Patrino vidis la amaso

Don't have time to read it all right now, but Esperanto doesn't have the existential "there." "There was a prince" is merely "Estis princo."
And "Happily ever after" would probably be more like "Ili vivis feliĉe eterne plu"

Also, having the original English would help.

I'm not much more than a beginner myself -- trying hard at the moment to avoid being one of those 'eternaj komencantoj' you read about -- and I admire your effort. My advice would be to set this aside now, and do some of the beginners courses on Lernu. You'll get a much better grasp of how E-o works than simply trying to use a dictionary.
Vespero has already mentioned 'there'. A further example is in 'verse' 3, line 4. What I believe you're trying to say is that they came with their fair maidens, but you appear to have used 'there' instead of 'their' in the original, and ended up with 'tie' instead of 'ilia' in the Esperanto.

Have fun with Esperanto! It may be an easier language than others, but it will still take a bit of effort.

Ok, to be more precise:

"unufoje" = "once"
"kelkfoje" = "sometimes"
"foje" = "once or several times"

As we are talking about one defined prince, "foje" would be to weak.

I'd say: "Estis iam princo... ", that's the way you would read it mostly in fairy tales.

Zed, you have certainly used some 'inventive' grammar in your translation. Optional accusative, optional agreement of adjective with noun/pronoun, infinitive or verb instead of noun, non-standard tense usage in reported speech etc.

It would be interesting to see if Google Translate could do a better job.

Why not post a couple of verses of the English original (not all of them) and then I am sure Forum members would be happy to provide their translations.
