Lately I have been trying to translate random bits of things I am reading, or random thoughts I have during the day, into Esperanto. The problem is that I know what I am trying to say, but I have no idea if it is actually correct (especially if there are more than 3 or 4 words involved).

I'd appreciate it if someone could tell me how close I got here. ridulo.gif

Avino nun diras, ke ŝi ne volas la tomatajn plantojn tiuj kreskantaj apud la verando. La antaŭa semajno ŝi diris al la cgardenistoj, ne elprenu ilin.

Grandma now says that she doesn't want the tomato plants growing next to the porch. The previous week, she told the gardeners not to take them out.

And from something I read,

Li ne povis ĉesi imagi sian amikon for tie en la malvarmeta krepuska pina arbaro, sola kaj en danĝero.

He couldn't stop imagining his friend out there in the chilly twilit pine forest, alone and in jeopardy.

Avino nun diras, ke ŝi ne deziras la tomatajn plantojn (kiuj estas) kreskantaj apud la verando.

The kiuj estas can be elided. Doing so doesn't change the case of kreskantaj.

Yes, dropping the "kiuj estas" does make the accusative necessary. Run this query through Tekstaro for plenty of examples: \w+ajn \w+ojn,? \w+antajn\b

You wouldn't need the accusative with a predicative though, as per HB's post.

This is what I was thinking except I did put in "tiuj". Am I wrong in thinking that would indicate "those ones"? As in "those ones growing by the porch," (and not the other ones growing in the yard, or the dead ones). I'm not always clear on the use of kiu vs tiu unless there is a question involved.

Thank you Hyperboreus. I think I've got it for now. I may be back later with the same question though. ridulo.gif Sometimes it takes a while to stick.

Hyperboreus:Here some variations:

She doesn't want the tomato plants growing next to the porch.
Ŝi ne deziras la tomatplantojn kreskantajn apud la verando.
I almost chose this one myself, but it is a word for word match to English. I always think those must be wrong even if they aren't. Maybe I'm just making things more complicated than they need to be?

Hyperboreus:The gardener doesn't want porches for supper.
La ĝardenisto ne deziras vespermanĝi verandojn.

Colorless green ideas sleep furiously.
Senkoloraj verdaj ideoj dormas kolerege.

Maybe, I got carried away a bit.
I like those. Next time something doesn't make sense over on the Esperanto boards, I'm just going to assume they're all talking nonsense. ridego.gif
