I started Livemocha's Esperanto 101 today for a bit of revision. One of the first lesson's questions is: 'Kiu estas via nomo?' Is that correct? I thought it would be 'Kio estas via nomo?' or 'Kiu vi estas?'

Both "Kio estas via nomo?" and "Kiu estas via nomo?" are correct. You might also use "Kiel vi nomiĝas?"

Some people don't like using "kio" because they feel it invites a response along the line of "it's a word I use to identify myself". There are also those who don't like "kiu" because they feel it suggests a group of names out of which you select your own. But the truth is both ways of asking it are valid and are in use, so it's not worth worrying about.

+1

Very nice answer, succinct and accurate. This should go in the grammar FAQ here.

And, in fact, it is.

Thanks for that. I do not remember ever having heard 'kiu' used in this context before.

If one is talking to multiple people, can one say "kio estas viaj nomoj?" If yes, then it's weird, and if no, then the singular version suddenly looks dubious.

You can say "kio estas viaj nomoj?", in my opinion.

"kio" can't be made plural, and it can be expressed together with plural things.

For example, the following question and answer are considered correct:
Kio estas tio?
Tio estas tri bananoj.

I can see the rationale behind that, because if the IO words represent phrases, then that should include plurality. (And this seems to slam the door in the face of that imposter "kioj".)
