What is the expression for a telephone message recorder/answering machine?

Thanks again! ridulo.gif

The term that jumps immediately to mind is perhaps "aŭtomata respondilo" but that's not based on any kind of research. I wonder if someone else has a better term. A quick Google search turned up "respondaparato" but I confess that this isn't a topic I've discussed in Esperanto.

Respondilo seems a no-brainer. In French it is répondeur

In Russian the term is автоответчик (avtootvetchik). Based on that, I'd say this is a good approximation. Or perhaps "telefona respondilo", if it's not clear from context that you're talking about telephones.

As I have learned to do from you and Erinja, I took your suggestions and ran them first through the Tekstaro where I found only a single usage of respondilo, but it did not seem to apply. I then did a search for the word across the Internet and found this Komputila Vortlisto which gave telefona respondilo for "answerphone" coming from Angla Esperanta Telekomunika Voraro by Christian Bertin, 1983/1985. The list has all sorts of other fascinating words in it, too. It's a real find.

My warmest thanks to you all.

I'd say (aŭtomata) (telefona) respondilo.

There seems little danger of respondilo in the sense of reply form (cf aliĝilo) being confused with respondilo in the sense of answerphone.

I challenge you to invent a context in which this confusion would be plausible.

On my own answerphone the Esperanto section of the bilingual announcement plays as 'Jen la respondilo de (mia nomo), bonvolu lasi mesaĝon'

scorpjke:I'd say (aŭtomata) (telefona) respondilo.
I think this is the best way to translate such words: optional specifiers you can omit if the context is clear enough.

This method was used in french to distinguish homonyms: Le temps (qui passe) =time, tempo ; le temps (qu'il fait) = weather, vetero; le temps (grammatical) = tense, verba tempo; dé (à jouer) = die, ĵetkubo; dé (à coudre) = thimble, fingringo

According to Firebug I updated the following entry in the Lernu dictionary in Nov 2011:

answering machine = respondaparato

- I can't remember exactly which sources I used for that, but I've just found this in ReVo:
respondilo, respondaparato:

1. Aparato, troviĝanta apud telefono, kiu aŭtomate respondas telefonalvokon kaj aŭdigas respondon, kaj plej ofte ebligas al la vokanto postlasi mesaĝon.

2. Similspeca sistemo, troviĝanta en la telefoncentralo, al kiu la telefonabonanto povas voki, por aŭskulti la alvenintajn mesaĝojn.

I've just updated the Lernu dictionary to this:
answering machine = (telefona/aŭtomata) respondilo, respondaparato
