I'm a beginner so bare with me please. Is this sentence correct:

Kio la inferno estas tio/tiu?= What the hell is that/this?

Is there another way to say that? Thanks!

A better way of putting it would be "Kio diable estas tio?"

So "diable" means "hell" too?

No it means "the devil", as in "what the devil is going on". But it's close enough to be suitable as a translation.

Side note: Try not to copy English idioms word-for-word; in many cases you'll find that what you come up with (for example your "kio la infero" ) sounds strange in Esperanto.

Saluton InsaneInter,

ne vere. „Hell“ estas infero (sen „n“) kaj „diablo“ estas „devil“, sed la parolturnon Zamenhof verŝajne prenis el la germana „Was zum Teufel (diablo) ist das?“, kvankam „was zur Hölle (infero)“ ankaŭ eblas, sed mi pensas, ke „Teufel (diablo)“ estas uzata plej ofte ol „Hölle (infero)“ en la germana lingvo.

[not really. „Hell“ en E-o is „infero“ (without the second „n“) and „diablo“ is „devil“, but most probably Zamenhof took this phrase from the German „Was zum Teufel (devil) ist das?“, although „was zur Hölle (hell)“ is possible as well, but I think that „Teufel (devil)“ is used more often than „Hölle (hell)“ in German.

Amike

If you open this page of the Vortaro angla-esperanta and search it for "hell", you'll find a treasure-trove of phrases. I swear.
