Hi everyone. I'm having trouble with this. It doesn't appear to be very common, but it does exist as in the word "oŭto" (an out in baseball).

Whenever I try to pronounce "oŭ," it just ends up sounding like a plain "o" or "aŭ."

If you're American, your "o" sound is likely to sound like "oŭ" unless you're careful.

You know how sometimes you finally understand something and you say "ohhhh!" ?

That's likely to be an oŭ sound. Also the ow on tow is oŭ.

Ahh yes! I do seem to be pronouncing "o" more like "oŭ." Thanks, this makes much more sense!

Am I alone in thinking it doesn't matter at all if that word comes out sounding like "oto", and that furthermore, it's a dodgy word that might've been better as "oto" or "eŭto"?

Wait, I thought "oux" was pron. like "Ow!"

I agree with you, but it doesn't hurt to understand how to pronounce it. I was almost completely lost.

You are thinking of . Don't worry too much about it. is such a rare combination that I've only managed to find two words with it: poŭpo (poop deck) and the aforementioned oŭto.

I thought you could only use ŭ in diptongs aŭ and eŭ, all other forms being "kontraŭfundamenta".

There is no such ban in the Fundamento, just a rule to use ŭ after vowels only.
