First esperanto book?

Hi all, I now have a good grasp of the esperanto language (or core lexicon of words with suggested grammar, depending on who you are). I just want to learn more words, and become more familiar with the language.

So, I decided for christmas, to get a book. I figured a collection of essays or short stories would be best, as if I miss any plot (through my lack of esperanto knowledge), then it will not wreck the entire book. One book I have spotted so far is Ĉeriza Ĝardeno, which looks promising.

"Paŝoj al plena posedo", if you manage to locate a copy. It's exactly what you need. A collection of short stories, each one progressively introducing new words.

"Paŝoj" is an excellent book, and it also has comprehension questions, a list of vocabulary words (with Esperanto definitions) and some amount of grammatical discussion following each story.

On the other hand, if you are looking for something less "didactic", I suggest the books of Sten Johansson. He writes originally in Esperanto, and has published several collections of his short stories.

If you want to see if you like his stories, several of them can be read online. You can find links from the Wikipedia page about him:

I particularly liked "La ĉokolada biskvito" and "Denaska kongresano" (both of which can be read online).

Thanks to all for responses! While I was originally going for something not didactic (love that words by the way, never heard of it before!). But on second thoughts, maybe it would better. I have read the first few paragraphs (thanks Rao!), and it seems to be written well, not like "This is John. He is tall, and blonde. John went to the supermarket." which was what I was trying to avoid. Looks like Paŝoj al Plena Posedo takes the top spot, for the time being!

If your budget is limited as mine is, then all the recommendations under “downloads” under the “Learning: tab of the Lernu! homepage are prifitable to follow. There are some stories in Pasxoj that I liked, especially the one about rainbows. But the last half of the book was not as interesting to me. My first books were Marta, by Zamenhof, and Pro Isxtar (Available online). Marta is a story about a Polish woman who was widowed with a small child and the hardships she endured. It is an early feminist book, if you will. Pro Isxtar is set in the Holy Land in the time of Job, and is horribly anti whatever other religion there was at the time. But it is an easy plot to follow and the vocabulary is not too hard. I was looking up about three words per page, which wasn't bad for a beginner. Winnie the Pooh is translated into Es-po; my copy is a xeroxed pirated copy - but it is a fun book and not too childish.

My budget, while normally limited, is actually very easy in the next few months, with christmas and all ridego.gif But I have looked at the storied, they look very good. Will get around to reading them soon.

As for Paŝoj al Plena Posedo, I looked on UEA and saw two versions.

That is the more expensive one. Does anyone know if it is hardback? If not, I will just buy the other cheaper one.
