Is the Esperanto community really accepting of people who are different??

You don't want people to think that you are crude and profane when you're really not, do you? I am always grateful if I am speaking a foreign language and someone saves me from myself when I am accidentally profane. I expect it should be the same for you, assuming that you are using this profanity etc by accident. This is the last I'm saying on this topic. It's off-topic here. You can message me privately if you want to say something else.

erinja:Familiarize yourself with the rules before posting. Really, using crude and disgusting expressions (which, incidentally, insult pretty much every male Esperanto speaker)? Profanity? You know better than this. Find another forum if you want to be crude. It's not allowed here.Someone insulted me and I didn't even notice.
Please PM me with the details of the insult so that I can be suitably offended.
Perhaps I could invite them to a duel.
Shouted insults at 40 paces.
First to lose their voice is the loser.
On second thoughts, don't bother, being offended is too much like hard work
I would probably just feel pity for the perpetrator and that would defeat the whole purpose of the exercise

erinja:If you are posting crude and profane expressions without the intention to be crude and profane, then the appropriate response to me when I delete them should be "Thank you" and not "You are doing a disservice to the Esperanto".I've said before, it's too bad Lernu doesn't have an 'ignore' button. that way people could put on ignore posters who tick them off for whatever reasons: use of vulgarities (also helpful to you admins: you would not have to get involved; the offended person could just be told "if you don't like the way they talk put 'em on ignore" ), people being putzes, users of pronouns one doesn't agree with, among others........

Any possibility of adding that function in at this late stage?

I'm not 100% sure I understand exactly what you're suggesting but it sounds similar to two different ideas we've had (both of which may be put into practice).
We have discussed making a function where people can vote a post up or down (a down vote would be the equivalent of a Facebook "dislike" button), and if a post had enough "dislikes", it could be hidden (or perhaps reduced to a line, and anyone who wanted to see it could click on it).
We've also discussed making it possible to hide all posts by a given user, so if you think "Wow, I really think X is a glass bowl and I never want to read anything that X says", you could put X on your ignore list, and X's posts would be hidden (or perhaps reduced to a single line, so that you could click to open and read an individual post if you wanted).
Anyone who wants to discuss this in more detail should open a new thread (or go to the Esperanto-language forums, where there is already a thread on changes to the website in the "about the website" sub-forum)

erinja:That's exactly what I have in mind, it's identical to the "ignore this poster" button on Delphi forums (where I have my own forum about Esperanto, in case anyone wants to come over)

Oijos:You are really doing disservice to Esperanto, erinja.Have you ever been to some Esperanto event outside of Lernu forum? Of course there's some difference between written forum conversation and conversation done real at some Esperanto event. But my tip: Even at forum discussion try to communicate like you would in real life. Furthermore, I don't think that Erinja is doing some disservice to Esperanto. She is doing well to keep online communication inside Lernu-forum running the friendly way.
orthohawk:I've said before, it's too bad Lernu doesn't have an 'ignore' button. It doesn't help to ignore somebody due its behaviour. Regarding person needs to get instant feedback about its misbehavior. Otherwise it will put into some never ending flame war story.

If that features will be implemented into next Lernu system that very fast would make quietly some flame wars.

spreecamper:No. I've run into more than my fair share of forum bullies to know that feedback of any kind just goes right over their heads as if nothing were ever said, and most of the time makes their behavior even worse.

orthohawk:I'm pretty sure that's what spreecamper meant when he said "make quietly". That is, to stop the flame wars because no one is reading them.spreecamper:Wow. orthohawk:I agree that ignoring somebody saves own mental energy. But I remain with it that ignoring somebody will not stop somebodies misbehavior. Regarding person will remain 'to spray poison and gall around' what mostly will provoke somebody. Furthermore to ignore somebody also means to devalue somebodies character of human being. I'm atheist btw.spreecamper:No. I've run into more than my fair share of forum bullies to know that feedback of any kind just goes right over their heads as if nothing were ever said, and most of the time makes their behavior even worse.
