"Today, the 13th of April, is this young man's birthday."

"Hodiaŭ, 13-a de aprilo, estas la naskiĝtago de ĉi tiu juna viro."

Is it 13-a and not 13-an, because 13-a de Aprilo is modifying the subject (hodiaŭ)?

"Today will be the day in which he will be given a name!"

"Hodiaŭ estos la tago je kiu oni donis lin nomo!"

Is "je kiu" correct? Is je the correct preposition to use in this context? Thank you!

With times and dates you can use 'je'. So 'la tago, je kiu' seems fine to me for 'the day on which'. (In British English this would be more usual than 'the day in which' ).

However the Tekstaro gives some support for 'en la tago' for 'on the day'.

As regards the case for the date after hodiaŭ, I think you might use either 'hodiaŭ, la 13-a de aprilo' or 'hodiaŭ, la 13-an de aprilo, the latter feeling somehow more emphatic.

In the second case you would be implying the use of a preposition, from my understanding. "Hodiaux, la 13an de aprilo.." ~= "Hodiaux, je la 13a de aprilo..." ~= "Today, on the 13th of April...", while you have "Hodiaux, la 13a de aprilo..." ~= "Today, the 13th of April..."

I'd agree with sudanglo that with the accusative n, it seems more emphatic, almost in need of follow-up with something more than a simple "estas" construction.

"Hodiaŭ, 13-a de aprilo, estas la naskiĝtago de ĉi tiu juna viro."= Today, (which happens to be) the 13th of April, is this young man's birthday.

"Hodiaŭ, la 13-an de aprilo, ĉi tiu junulo festas sian naskiĝtagon." = Today, on the 13th of April, this young man celebrates his birthday.

I wouldn't use je, and also the use of doni is wrong. I would say:

"Hodiaŭ estas la tago kiam oni donas (donos) nomon al li!"

Thank you all for the responses!

I just noticed that I did use doni incorrectly.

Thus, would these be correct?

"Hodiaŭ, la 13-a de aprilo, estas la naskiĝtago de ĉi tiu juna viro."

(Today, [which happens to be] the 13th of April, is this young man's birthday.)

"Hodiaŭ estos la tago en kiu oni donos lin nomo!"

(Today will be the day in which he will be given a name!)

Hodiaŭ can be quite ordinarily followed by a verb in the future if the action has not yet occurred - eg hodiaŭ, ni foriros al Parizo.

English allows today is the last day for sending the form in as well as today will be our last opportunity to ... I would think that Esperanto allows a similar nuancing depending on the speaker's perspective.

A much more serious grammatical issue is cases after doni.

In Esperanto we don't say doni iun ion but doni ion al iu. In other words Esperanto avoids double accusative which could cause confusion between the direct object of the action and the indirect object.

I see. Could you also say "Hodiaŭ estas la tago en kiu oni donos al li nomon"?

Grammatically that is fine. I only turned it round and used ricevi for stylistic reasons.

Yes, I see how ricevi makes the sentence nicer. Thank you!
