What are you supposed to say after somebody sneezes in Esperanto?

In Russian we used to say "be healthy!".

I personally would say 'silentu' ridulo.gif

I say "Sanon!" from the italian "salute!" which means "(i wish you) health". Occasionally a funny friend will reply, "ne saninde" okulumo.gif

In French we say "Sanon" or "Je via sano" before everybody around the table take a first sip of wine at the beginning of a meal lango.gif

Perhaps we could use Bonan Sanon which parallels Bonan Matenon and similar greetings, and is also equivalent to the German Gesundheit.

I think "sanon" is the most common response. It is the only one I have ever really heard used in the Esperanto community. It doesn't seem to vary by country as far as I have noticed; American speakers do say "sanon" and not "Dio benu vin!" okulumo.gif

What do we say before drinking wine, then? (I think it's "cheers" in English, isn't it?)

"Je via sano!", in that case.

But most Americans say nothing before drinking wine, and nothing before eating, so many of these expressions ("Je via sano!" "Bonan apetiton!") are seen only rarely in the US Esperanto community, because it doesn't come naturally to us to say anything at all.

With foreign Esperanto speakers I often forget to say "Bonan apetiton" before starting to eat. Often I have already taken a few bites of food when they say "Bonan apetiton" to one another. It makes me feel rude and I don't do it on purpose, but I did not grow up saying anything at all before eating, so it's hard for me to remember this custom in settings where it is common.

Really, eh? I am very surprised. For me (and I imagine it's the same for people I drink with), it is just so pleasant to start drinking a good wine in good company that it gets us all animated and cheerful, and it only seems natural to show everybody how we all think this is going to be enjoyable to be together and to share this "gods' nectar"
