An Esperantist friend and I want to discuss building wooden ship models. Does anyone know of books or web resources we could use to learn the names of techniques, parts, tools?

The Esperanto Wikipedia might have some suggestions if you look at their articles on ship-building or modelling - though I would not take it without a grain of salt, as Vikipedio's terminology is rather inconsistent.

Rats, no joy. A wonderful gentleman there at Gresillon tried to help, but could find nothing for me. Does anyone know of a visual dictionary showing parts of a tall ship? Or a dictionary of wood working terms and tools? Anything that might help me out? malgajo.gif

It is quite possible the appropriate vocabulary has not been developed (or standardised) in Esperanto, since this is a rather technical area.

If this is the case, you could just create your own terminology, at least in those instances where it's obviously lacking: either by forming descriptive compounds, or borrowing the equivalent term from another language (under the authority of Rule 15 of the Fundamento).

This is, after all, the way all technical vocabulary and jargon enters Esperanto. If you discover there isn't a precedent for a certain term yet, go and make one!

Mmm. You did ask. I have a collection of tool terms/woodworking terms in a project of mine. It's here if you want to take a look. I try to use descriptive compounds whenever possible to keep things accessible to nefakuloj.

I also have the beginnings of a list of nautical terms. I don't know if you'd find that useful, but it's here.

I'll take a look in my picture dictionary for terms about the tall ships.
