Well, they have different meanings.

Usually I say "malsanulejo" which is slightly more general than "hospitalo" or "kliniko". I wouldn't recommend to use "hospitalo" because there are similar words in other languages, which have slightly different meanings.

"najbaro" and "proksimulo" are totally different words. "najbaro" is someone who happens to live or work next to you. "proksimulo" is more like a family member or a closed friend.

You need to turn off the option "Atenti usklecon" in the search. Here are the correct numbers:

malsanulejo: 49
hospitalo: 90
najbaro: 354
proksimulo: 33

You can use the Tekstaro to get an idea of the popularity of a term through time as the source texts are roughly in chronological order.

The results can be surprising - for example there are no hits for 'mesaĝo' (total hits 236) before 1950.

I never saw the word malsanulejo until I ran into it at Duolingo. It took me 10 seconds to work it out in my head as "sick person place". Fairly broad and can be applied to many things: doctor's office, walk-in clinic, hospital... Personally I prefer malsanulejo simply cause a non esperanto speaker has no idea what you are saying but they will with hospitalo.
