evanamd:On Duolingo, an accepted translation of "is the map his or hers?" is "Ĉu la mapo estas lia aŭ ŝia?"

This seems ambiguous, since it could be asking "Does the map belong to either him or her?", or it could mean "Is the map his or is the map hers?", so I'm wondering if this is an acceptable usage and how you would answer it. Vortaro.net's entry for ĉu doesn't show anything similar, and I don't know where else I might find examples of it.

Thoughts?
I think what you need in order to express your other meaning is the Esperanto equivalent of 'either'.

Is the map his or hers? could be either:
  • Is the map his or is the map hers? (Ĉu la mapo estas lia aŭ ŝia?)
  • Is the map either his or hers?
aŭ/aŭ can be used to mean either/or.

How about: Ĉu la mapo estas aŭ lia aŭ ŝia? = Is the map either his or hers?
