robbkvasnak:In my dissertation published in 2007 I made a strong argument against Maslow's pyramid which is in my view an attempt to verify the purely materialistic view of capitalism.
It seems that this model is flawed for sure since an atheist soldier can die for their beliefs (thereby putting his higher needs above his lower needs).

I have always thought of this hierarchy as more socialist.

It suggests that a utopian society will emerge when everyone has their needs met. It is in direct conflict with right-wing ideologies in America. Here are just 2 examples:
- teenagers should wait until they are married to have sex because it is not a need.
- only after you have good morals, will be successful. Maslow's view is exactly opposite

It is the exact opposite of right-wing ideology.

Anyway, the point is that people will learn Esperanto if they are getting their needs met through it.

If your GF only spoke Esperanto and Vietnamese, then I can almost guarantee that you will love the Esperanto language until there is a problem in the relationship.

Also, when you say "in my dissertation" you are confirming the stereotype that Esperantists are elitists.

I had a boyfriend who spoke Italian, English, and Esperanto. The relationship is long over but it did not taint my view of either Esperanto or Italian. I wouldn't be so quick to say that people like Esperanto only until something goes wrong for them in the Esperanto world, though this is surely true for some people.

Elitists just because someone had a dissertation? I disagree. Would it be a working class thing only, just because one Esperantist says something about the factory where they work? I have certainly met blue collar Esperantists.

Esperanto is a constant in my life, as it connects with my prayer (per la Esperanta Biblio k.t.p.) and with my sense that the language of my origins (evidente la angla-usona) is an instrument of empire. So can I say that Esperanto is for me just a hobby? Absolute ne! It is a golden thread woven through a lot of other things that are important to me.

In many places around the world, the feminist movement gets their inspiration from Western cultures.

A lot of Americans (such as Bernie Sanders) want to make America more socialistic because of the influence of Nordic European countries.

Perhaps cultural imperialism is not such a bad thing. Maybe, it is better for some cultures to be influenced by others.

why am I an elitist if I wrote a dissertation? I am not rich. I had to work four different jobs at times to get through my education. Nobody helped me other than my husband who was also working on his degree at the same time. He, too, worked. If I had continued working at the bank where I was before and had managed to get higher up, then I would not be an elitist but a 'self-made man' [of course this doesn't exist - it is a free-market fantasy].
I find it very insulting to be called and elitist for what I have learned and studied and continue to study.
Should I through my dreams out and go and watch the Marlins play ball, drinking beer and eating cancer-causing hotdogs so avoid being an 'elitist' - like my 24/7 drunken neighbor or my gun-toting brother hunting ducks and deer and belching in public because he thinks it's funny?

I think Alkanadi is confusing "elitist" with "educated". There is a strong sense of anti-intellectualism in much of the United States which mixes these two concepts. It suits the politicians just fine when the electorate is uneducated, anyhow.

Influence and imperialism are not the same thing. Setting an example that turns out to be good and possibly gaining adherents is different than controlling channels of culture/politics/economics etc.

'Elitism' is now becoming one of those oft-used words where the meaning is not clear or shared in everyone's mind. Being elitist would strictly mean supporting the existence of an exclusive group at the top of society dominating all spheres. A great descrition of all our societies as it happens.
Reading physics at university, or wearing a tie does not necessarily make anyone elitist. Esperanto likely has its fair share of 'educated' types, probably because it appeals to the people who like to learn.

I don't think that being an elitist is a bad thing. It doesn't mean that you were born with a silver spoon in your mouth. being elite just means that you have a great achievement in your life.
Should I through my dreams out and go and watch the Marlins play ball, drinking beer and eating cancer-causing hotdogs so avoid being an 'elitist'
I wouldn't if I were you. Being among the elite just means that you are of a higher social status. It isn't a bad thing. Most people are trying to achieve a higher status in life.

Elite means that you are really good at something. It could be academic or other areas, such as sports.

Athletes that go to the Olympics are elite. People with a PhD are also elite.

I thought that was the definition.

Being elite is a compliment where I come from. Does it make sense if someone gets upset when you imply that they are the best of the best.
