I would say that roller derby is more about the "battle" than many other sports. It's basically a kind of full-contact race, with no exterior goal such as getting a ball or a puck across a goal line.

And then there is the show aspect to it — roller derby does have a professional wrestling vibe, with the athletes/performers having "stage names" and playing to the crowd.

Right, and with team names that are also appropriately aggressive (and humorous). Two of our local teams are Scare Force One and the Majority Whips.
