Is there a small private school in your area? I change send them an email if you want. If everyone sent them a polite, tactful email then they might consider it. We should start small.

Or, how about this:

Duolingo boasted the interest in the language. Is there a different program that we could encourage to do the same?

What about Livemocha or Busuu?

Benny Lewis is an (inactive) member here. I doubt he is interested in the spadework needed for Esperanto. He's preoccupied with promoting his 'fluent in three months' malarkey of doing accent impersonations, which is now a business opportunity.

You rather misleadingly cut off this sentence, to remove the "dum la 80aj jaroj." The context also suggests that it is trying to offer an alternative to a certain kind of please-notice-me, U.N.-or-bust attitude.

I don't consider myself a raŭmisto because the word scarcely means anything other than "I personally don't want to proselytize right now" and any attempt to nail it down more precisely seems to play into the hands of self-aggrandizing Civitestroj.
Esperanto is also for all those Francoj who recently voted National Front.
This is heart-warmingly generous, but Esperanto's interna ideo is not quite wispy enough for us to expect our naciistaj amikoj not to notice it. Forigi la murojn inter la gentoj — what kind of Elders-of-Zion Trojan horse is this?! At the most they will accept it as a temporary strategy for "getting rid of English" — and then as a stepping stone towards replacing any minority language within their sphere of influence with good old French.

I find this whole finvenkisto vs. raŭmisto thing to be so tiresome. Do we really need to separate ourselves into named categories for why we learned the language and what we plan to do with it? What a worthless endeavor, in such a small community, to divide ourselves further.

What if everyone just focused on using Esperanto in the way they enjoy, and promoting Esperanto (or not) in their preferred way, without casting judgement on the differing decisions of others?

You know what, I have seen some obscenely ugly advertising materials for Esperanto, that seemed likely to be supremely ineffective. But this truly falls into the category of things that are not my problem. Other people are free to promote Esperanto in a way that I don't really like, and I am free to promote it in my own way, or not, and to create my own art/literature/music/advertising materials, or not.

We would all do better to focus more on what we are doing and less on what others are doing. I fail to see the point in going online to trash the X-istoj because you disagree with their way of doing Esperanto. It's for the same reason that I just can't understand why people spend hours putting together detailed websites on every reason why they dislike Esperanto. There are just so many better ways to spend your time than this.

Thank you Erinja ridulo.gif I come out and say, hey I'm a Raŭmisto because I focus mainly on the cultural aspects of Esperanto and don't bother with the promotion and suddenly people are all up-in-arms like I just declared my love to Hitler. I have no idea where this hatred of raŭmismo has come from or even why it exists.

For those that want to know why I use the tag, "I'm a Raŭmisto" it's simply for convenience. It's easier than saying, "I'm not into promoting Esperanto, that's not my thing, never had a massive urge to promote. I'm more for building on its culture in order to give something to my kids worth while". I guess it's like saying "I'm and atheist". It's easier than explaining in thirty sentences why I don't see the existence of god as important.

For clarity, let me say that using the language for cultural purposes is a jolly good thing.

So writing poems in Esperanto, translating Voltaire and Shakespeare into Esperanto, posting video's of yourself and friends on You Tube singing Christmas carols in Esperanto - all jolly good.

But promoting the idea that there is an Esperanto culture, not so good.

It just seems inappropriate for a lingua franca. What if that Esperanto culture is perceived as inimical to a large section of the population, deters people from learning the language?

Although the number of Esperanto-speakers is not knowable, it is clearly vastly superior to all other contenders in the constructed language arena. But the paucity of speakers remains Esperanto's weakest point.
