Vestitor:The 'h' system is the one Zamenhof proposed in the Fundamento. This was basically because normal typewriters didn't have the diacritical marks, but in the age of computers this is not a problem now. The problem has 'gone away'.

For some perhaps; however, I have no idea how to make my keyboard give me diacritics. I will continue to use the X-system as it avoids potential confusion.

There's no reason you can't have the diacritical marks. Tajpi for Windows is free and easy to use and the addition of Esperanto as language on Linux is a point and click affair.

But unfortunately most of the links to download Tajpi are outdated and no longer work. I found a working link once, but now I can't find it again . Anyone know where it is now?

I have read and written Esperanto messages and other texts on the internet for more than thirty years. There have been both komencantoj and akademianoj among the authors. I have noticed this: The better your Esperanto, the less you use the x convention. Near the top it has come to always be shanghighi and never sxangxigxi when a surrogate is needed (and it is still needed, from time to time, whatever the fierce alphabet purists say; no need to apologize for writing shanghighi).

And what more: the top never takes part in the discussions of x vs. h. They just seem to read both systems fluently and make no fuss about it. And if I may add a personal opinion: The alphabet substitutes become annoying and hard to read only when people use their own favourite, ingenious, world-saving systems, like (for ŝaŭmo) s'au'mo, sxawmo, 'sa'umo, s^au^mo, ^sa^umo and other even more bizarre transcriptions.

Sure. And "more than thirty years" was perhaps an overestimation. My first contributions still to be found on the web are from 1992. But there was life even before that.

Of course it has. And everybody has their own criteria for what is elite.

This is an interesting comment. I don't know if I qualify as "the top" but I've long not considered x versus h to be an interesting topic of conversation. It seems clear to me that each have their uses and it's just a matter of taste and a matter of why exactly you are using these letters rather than the ordinary correct 'hatted' letters. I agree completely that the experienced Esperanto speaker reads both x-system and h-system texts as easily as they read texts with the correct letters, and that you only run into problems when someone makes up their own weird system. Those texts are hard to read.

If I read a text and you ask me a minute later which system it used, I probably could not even tell you. I just read it and don't think about it.

For what it's worth, I think that people who are interested in using mainly Fundamental forms, who are more traditional in their grammar, are more likely to use the h-system since this is what Zamenhof recommended. Not in every case, of course! But this is what I've noticed and I would be willing to bet that more than half of Academy members use the h-system. I'm pretty Fundamental and I use x, but like I said it's a matter of taste, and my typing all happens in x form (also to assist with the ĉapeligaj programoj), so it would be very hard for me to switch to h at this point, even if I wanted to.

Thank you very much! This time it worked: I can write now ŝ, ĵ and so on whithout having to use the x-system...
