medical advance retarded - bacteriophages

An important medical advance, namely, the utility of bacteriophages, was retarded due to the language barrier. The relevant extract from Wikipedia can be found here.

That's not the whole story though. The Wikipedia page lists other factors the little extract omits to highlight the language part. The discovery and implementation of antibiotics; improper clinical trials.

There were (are) enough people versed in Russian in the west to be able to translate any research, so the only possible reasons for research and use lapsing in the West must have been the Cold War and the already mentioned mass production and use of (cheaper) antibiotics. If access to the research had been vital, there would have been some attempt to get it.

Ergo, I don't think this is a language-barrier issue, rather than one of geopolitics and a different direction taken.

Well yes and no, it states that both Soviet and Western researchers were pursuing it in the 20s and 30s, but that it lapsed afterwards in the West. This implies the late 30s (beginning of WWII which is going to cause disruption), and then the period afterwards IS the onset of the Cold War. By the late forties antibiotics were being pursued.

So there's nothing to see here.

Methinks you're just upset because it's not a striking discovery supporting the need for Esperanto. Think what you like, it's no loss to me.

I hear that metaphor very often. Anyway, if it is a vote to see who is correct, I am going to say it had nothing to do with geopolitics because the research began in the 1920s. But, I have no idea because I am just going off the interpretation of the linked article, which may be false, incomplete, ect..

No, the difference is that I acknowledged them all rather than choosing the ones that suited my needs.

I see you employed the failed and illiterate 'could care less' for obvious reasons, but it doesn't even work here in the way you suggested:

"He (do you think he) could care less about the facts"

It's no wonder the world needs Esperanto when one of its largest areas is filled with illiteracy.

It will be interesting to see whether the increasing ineffectiveness of antibiotics against evolving bacteria will lead to a renascence of research into phage therapy.

Now to make this relevant to Esperanto, here's a translation challenge, namely the above sentence. Here's one attempt:

Sciindas, ĉu la falanta kapablo de antibiotikoj kontraŭ evoluantaj bakterioj sekvigos reviviĝon de esplorado pri bakteriofaga terapio.
