It seems there ain't no changes in word order. (Google Translation)
You shouldn't do that = Vi ne devus fari tion
You don't have to do that = Vi ne devas fari tion

Is the difference between those just devis / devus?

I strongly think that there should've been a similar discussion about this one in the past. Please let me know if anyone have the address.

The address to the past?

The difference between 'shouldn't do that' and do not have to to do that' is rather clearly, neatly and subtly achieved in Esperanto, in my opinion.

So the differene is devis / devus?

Devas/devus.

Devus is: should/ought to. Whereas devas is: must/have to.

FYI the forums are no longer divided by language. One can write in any language in the forum for any topic. However, each thread has a language, and the first post of the thread should indicate the language. This thread should have been created in the forum "Questions", with "English" as the language of the thread.

Hi Erinja. It might be a good idea to create a new thread (can you do sticky ones?) for this or I suspect you will be explaining this for a long time to come.
Regards
Guy

I don't mind admitting that this new format for the forum is a bit confusing. I refined the language to English in order to find this, but it seems like a lot of trouble to find threads. The older system was far more straightforward.

Not a criticism of the overhaul, which is very...lovely. ridulo.gif

Have a look at a similar thread

The new system is confusing if you're used to the old system, but I think that coming to it fresh, it's no worse than the old system and possibly a lot better. We always had a certain number of people in the old forums who came to the "Questions" forum and asked a question in a language other than Esperanto, not understanding that they need to go to the appropriate language forum for that.

Devus is: should/ought to. Whereas devas is: must/have to.
Thanks a lot ridulo.gif
