Hi,

I'm very much a beginner and working through the new lernu Esperanto course, and got stuck on the third set of exercises in chapter 5. The exercise requires you to write a sentence in the format provided in the example below, and I've been getting all of the singular exercises right so far. However, I can't seem to get the plurals right - I've tried "Tioj" and "Tiuj" but they are always marked incorrect. Can you tell me where I might be going wrong?

Example: li + ideo = Tio estas lia ideo.
Plural: li + ideoj = Tioj/Tiuj estas lia ideoj. ???

Thanks!

Hi ridulo.gif

I think you're doing great with the plurals of tio and tiu! Remember that your possessive adjective (lia) needs to agree with the noun it's modifying.
Singular: lia ideo
Plural: liaj ideoj

My recommendation: Try "Tioj/Tiuj estas liaj ideoj."

Amike

Of course - thanks so much!

En Leciono 13 de La tuta Esperanto Henrik Seppik skribas:

91. Kio, kiu, kia.
Rimarko: La io-vortoj estas uzataj nur ununombre: Per kio (ne «kioj») iras la homoj? Per la piedoj.

Do:
"Tio estas liaj ideoj".
"Tiuj estas liaj ideoj."

Never use 'tioj'! It's grammatically incorrect. As Frano said above, -io words are only used in the singular, whereas -iu words can apply to both the singular and the plural.

Don't 'tio' and 'tiu' mean 'that'? What's the difference between the two?

This is in numerous threads here, but basically you can see the difference by looking at the corresponding 'k' words: kio and kiu. They are both 'what' but refer to different things, or rather things in different ways.

In short tio = that and tiu = that one.
