I was digging into the meaning of "antaŭ", and my current understanding is that "antaŭ" covers every contextual meaning of the English word "before". It can mean before in time, or in front of. The standard Esperanto word for "previous" seems to be "antaŭa". I thought I had a handle on this, but then I noticed that "antaŭ" has a "mal-" version. If "antaŭa" means "previous", why isn't "malantaŭa" "next"? Similarly, if "antaŭ" means "before in time", why does Esperanto have "post" rather than just using "malantaŭ"? What's the difference between "malantaŭ", "post" and "sekva", and why have all three?

Thanks in advance,

Richard

The language of this thread is English. rollykelson's response seems to be in FInnish, although I am not certain (perhaps Estonian?). If a thread on lernu! begins in Language XYZ, then all responses should be in Language XYZ. There are multiple opportunities for threads to be in multiple languages.

It is Finnish, and it's also spam. ridulo.gif I can't delete it, though.

Seems to me there is slight semantic difference:

post - after (time, space)
malantaŭ - behind (place)
Have a look at the ReVo entry for post

sekva is a diferent word and imply a sequence. Thus "antaŭa" is an antonym because it carries the sense of ordered sequence just like in time.
Clearly "malantaŭ" is not interchangeable because it has nothing to do with the concept of time.
By the same logic, "Posta" however could be used as a sub for sekva.

Hope it helps
