As always with any translation, there are issues of style. so some might have made different choices. One small point though where your choice might have been influenced by your grammatical awareness so far.
Rainsford's mystification presumably precedes his jumping up and moving to the rail. But eksaltis, movis konfuziĝis implies a sequence.
An adverbial participle can be used to refer to the subject thus - Mistifikite, Rainsford ekstaris, movis ... This adverbial participle use is very common in Esperanto.
But here, I think we want perpleks(igit)a for mystified, Mistifikita, I think, can have the flavour tricked or hoaxed.

"He strained his eyes" gave me some trouble, but I just came up with something that was generally like it. "Reports" had to be downgraded to the more generic "sound."
"To get greater elevation" definitely was something I wasn't sure about, and I wasn't certain that "por fariĝi pli alta" worked or was even grammatically correct Esperanto. Translated literally into English, "in order to become more high" sound atrocious, but I'm learning that was sounds like poor English can be good Esperanto.I also wasn't sure that "fariĝi" could actually be used in that way.
And I was not sure that "sed estis kiel peni vidi tra litkovrilo" was grammatically correct. English words that end in -ing trip me up when it comes to finding the Eo equivalent.

The course I just recently finished talked about participles, but only very briefly and not enough that I actually understand anything about them. They are a mystery to me, but seem to be very important for conveying certain things.
I should probably take a few days to do nothing but read up on participles.
