One of my earlier comments didn't work properly so I just fixed that :S

And in addition to Vejktoro and Osxo-Jabe, I'd say another reason for peculiar sounds is because of the way speaking systems change as well. 'Bark' and 'woof' wouldn't have been said our way in the Middle Ages IMHO.

I have eaten frogs only once.... in Ireland (Ok, it was a french restaurant, .... well... a stereotype of what foreigners think about how a french restaurant should looks like)

In french, frogs does (goes?) coa-coa. (verb coasser). Not croa-croa (that's for a raven)
