Is there a translation of the hitchhiker's guide in esperanto? I didn't find it on amazon, google etc.

This page says it's unknown, but that there's a translation of the intro to the first book.

Isn't the cautionary tale of the Babel Fish contrary to the ideals of Esperanto?

No, the Babel Fish is just a useful tool, a typical 'plot device'. The only cautionary tale related to language was of the people that was punished with mind-reading and therefore always had to think of banal things to prevent their important thoughts from being read.
