For a few weeks recently I had some serious internet problems at home and my speeds were down less than 750kbps and I was still able to get into SL (ok it was slow and things too a long time to "rezz" -- ie come into detail/focus), so it's certainly possible on a slow connection.
Unfortunately I don't think my internet is quite fast enough for it, so I might have to wait til I move in another month for college (where I know there's an Esperanto club, so maybe I wouldn't need SL that much to interact in Esperanto)...

It is a virtual 3D world. Yes, there are games inside SL but do not think that it's a game like WoW or Sims or anything like that. It's more like a platform for exploring, meeting, learning, showing-off, building, creating, socialising.
If you only have a limited amount of time, then SL works because unlike a "game" where you have to come back and do a certain thing, or finish a certain thing, there are no real constraints on you in SL. I know it sounds like I'm selling it, but I just enjoying SL; it's given me the opportunity to do things I always wanted to do in a virtual environment and meet some great people along the way. Provu do!

fulei:My situation is a bit unique; I use a cellular modem. I downloaded it but it doesn't seem to run very well. It takes several minutes to load then it disconnects. So it looks like I'll have to stick to browsing the forums til I move, which is fine with me... I'm kind of hesitant to get back into online games after several years of MMO's =PAh ok I can relate to that, I've had to use my iPhone as a 'modem' while I wait for proper internet to come back :-/
Oh well, hope the move goes well

I think I'll definitely try it when I can, but probably just to use Esperanto/attend anything dealing with Esperanto.
Is there just one big server that everyone logs into, and all the Esperantists hang out in one place?

The "World" is divided up into "regions" of land; each region is hosted and supported by a separate server somewhere. There are literally thousands of regions. Each region may be owned by Linden Labs (the people who provide Second Life), or privately owned (well, leased really). Privately owned land may be used privately by the owners, or publicly as when a company has a presence; or they may sell/rent/sublease that land to other people. Linden Lab's land may also be bought/sold/rented depending on the situation.
Think of a region as a city or state in a country: it may be made up of 1 large "build" or several smaller builds; some may be public, some private. There maybe nightclubs, shops, parks, houses, galleries etc within each of those regions.
The "Esperanto Lando" as it is now; is simply a piece of a region owned and run by an Esperanto group. There are other places Esperantists go; though not many it seems.
When you log into Second Life, you begin at a central orientation zone where you can learn how to use the controls and procedures. Once you know what you're doing, you can "teleport" to the mainland and start traveling through the world. You don't generally move from one location to another, you "teleport", a bit like how clicking a link on a website "teleports" you from one page to another, so you move from one location to another in SL. You can walk around and even fly around within the region you're in. On the mainland you can cross region borders as you travel around. It's quite seamless really.
But yes, it's all one "grid" which means once you log in, you can communicate with anyone else logged in, it is not compartmentalized and you are never cut off from other parts of the grid.

I'm at the orientation zone and I'm trying to set up my character. However I don't seem to be able to change certain items of my person, I can change head, eyes, lips etc. But when I try to change my hair nothing happens, it's as if it's failing to load the textures or something because when I look in the little square that shows what the hair looks like, it's empty. There are several other items that I don't seem to be able to change too.
Do you think this could be something to do with an incompatibility with my graphics card? I had a look at the system requirements, and my card (Radeon 2600HD) appears to be on the recommended list so I don't know what this could be. Or am I just doing something wrong?
