Is the following usage of 'pli' and 'plu' in any way correct?

"Por tio ke mi povas lerni esperanton plu, mi devas legi pli ol nun."

Sincerely,

W. Weston

I believe that is correct.

The sentence is a bit convoluted. I would say Por lerni Esperanton pli bone, mi devas legi pli ol nun.

If you want to emphasize capability for continuing study, I would use the imperative povu, e.g. Por ke mi povu lerni Esperanton plu, mi devas legi pli ol nun.

Here's an example from Zamenhof: Sed por ke nia laborado estu fruktoporta, ni devas antaŭ ĉio bone klarigi al ni la internan ideon de la esperantismo. (Speech to the 2nd International Congress at Geneva, 1906; see e.g. Originala Verkaro, pp 370-371).

For more examples see PMEG (last box and following sentence).

Thank you very much.

I must say, I have been a little afraid to post questions like this, thinking they would seem too dumb. This has nothing to do with the atmosphere or anything else concerning the web site. On the contrary, I would like to thank everyone for not making my questions or me feel dumb! Much appreciated!

Post away. We've all been at an early stage (some not that long ago), and we've all had our share of basic questions. Besides - if you're wondering about something, odds are someone else is too, so get it out there.

Esperantists, as a general rule, like new people learning the language. Being rude to them is therefore somewhat counterproductive. ridulo.gif
