You are right, inventing a new word doesn't change the language and is absolutely required if something new needs a name.
Inventing a new name for smile would not be a problem for the language, although you still couldn't use "rideti" for a chuckle, because "rideti" has been used for smiling since more than 100 years.
The problem is more general. Really every beginner, when he rimarks something that appears strange, begins to think how to change the language. I must confess that I also thought so in the beginning, the language is artificial, so what can I do to make it better?

...[/list]This list is endless. And almost everybody has some good ideas about words that are lacking in Esperanto.
I think the language is already good enough for normal usage and no beginner is able to make it better. Please try to understand what Esperanto already provides and don't underestimate what Zamenhof created (thank you Donniedillon for your post). We must be very carfully to invent new words, because the small number of words to learn is one of the big advantages of Esperanto.

English aside, you make excellent points and there is nothing I could disagree with. It seems I over simplified the situation and overlooked some of the things you just mentioned.
Maybe smajli can just be a 'inter amikoj' word/neologism (as Greyshades said), just like friends often do in their mother languages (e.g. with some friends I'll drop in random Japanese/Chinese words because we all understand them).

Greyshades:...Esperanto has no genuine word for smile...Yeah, except for the fact that it does. "Rideti" is one of the compound words that appears in the Fundamento itself. Like "lernejo," "okulvitro," and "subaĉeti" it's meaning is untouchable. It may not be perfectly logical, but as others have pointed out: Esperanto is meant to be easy, not logical (though many "easy" aspects of the language are "logical.")
If you want to say "chuckle," there are a number of other words you could use, you could even *gasp* use more than one word to describe it!

When in doubt, I recomend 'they'
, after all that's probably best described as a 'numberless' and 'genderless' 3rd person pronoun.How would this be done in EO though? Oni or ili? Or a surprise pronoun?
