"Kion signifas tri atestantoj?", respondis trankvile la murdisto, - "mi povas nomi mil homojn, kiuj ne vidis tion."
And I tried to figure out what it means, but doesn't make sense... Can someone please tell me what the joke is?
I'm still learning Esperanto, so this is probably too advanced for me, but I still want to know what the joke is... Hehe.

"You don't need to deny (it)", said the Judge to the murderer. "Behold, before you stand three witnesses, who saw that you did (the) crime."
"What's the meaning of three witnesses", responded calmly the murderer - "I can name a thousand people who didn't see it."

"It's useless to deny", says the judge to the murderer. "Look, there are three witnesses standing infront of you, who all saw you comitting the crime."
"Three witnesses dont't mean anything", the murderer calmly replies, - "I can show you thousands of people who DIDN'T see it."

At least for me, anyway. Reading a joke in Esperanto for me sounds like reciting a poem in monotone English - probably a sign that I need to read more Esperanto!

erinja:I have heard some Esperanto jokes that I genuinely thought were funny. But the ones on the lernu main page weren't really among them! Most of them are pretty cheesy, and I have definitely been contacted by students, more than once, who wanted an explanation of a joke that they didn't find funny. They thought that they misunderstood the joke. I was forced to tell them that they understood the language perfectly, that the joke simply wasn't very funnyAhah! that's funny

HOWEVER, I truly believe that something an american/brit would find funny, someone from Russia, or Africa wouldn't understand what is funny about it. Some jokes might be funny, but many foreigners I've met understand english perfectly, and jokes just go right over their head... It's the same with their jokes, they'll tell me a joke and I don't get it, and it's not funny to me, and the other person is laughing their head off.

I have a Canadian friend who lived in Israel for a fairly long period. She said that when she went to see movies, the native English speakers in the audience would laugh at completely different times than the native Hebrew speakers. I think it wasn't only due to differences between speech and subtitles, either; the situations they found funny were different.
